Seek refuge from the misguiding Fitna

Seek refuge from the misguiding Fitna

Explained by Shaykh Salih Āli Shaykh

Translated by Rasheed ibn Estes Barbee

Imam Ahmad said, “So I asked Allah to grant me the memorization of the Quran, but I did not ask for it in a state of well-being. So, I did not memorize the Quran except while in prison chained up.

No doubt this is a tremendous statement that shows that the person should be mindful in their supplication and always ask Allah the Exalted, for pardon and wellbeing. When you ask your Lord, ask that it be granted with well-being, for you do not know what may happen to you. Perhaps what you seek may come only through an illness that incapacitates you, or through the loss of your children and family, leaving you alone in your home. Perhaps it may come only through an exile that you neither desire nor choose. Therefore, always ask your Lord that His blessings come with pardon and well-being.

Like this is seeking refuge with Allah from Fitna (trials), meaning the Fitna that causes misguidance. Therefore, when a supplicant prays that Allah the Exalted, protects them from Fitna, scholars have said that it is best to seek refuge from the Fitna that misleads people. One should say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the Fitna that misleads" or "from the Fitna that leads people astray." Or one may say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being led astray in my religion," or something similar. This is because good things can also be a Fitna. Family can be a trial, and wealth can be a trial. These are things that a person inevitably deals with—one must marry, have children, and possess wealth; these are necessities of life. However, these are forms of trials that come from good things, yet they may lead some people astray.

For this reason, a person should seek refuge in Allah the Exalted, from misleading trials.

Ibn Taymiyyah: Corruption on earth is due to disobedience and Shirk

Ibn Taymiyyah: Corruption on earth is

due to disobedience and Shirk

{Evil (sins and disobedience of Allaah, etc.) has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds, etc.), that Allah may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allah, and begging His Pardon).} [Surah al-Room (30): 41]

Shaikh al-Islaam, Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:

Whoever contemplates on what is going on in the world, will find that the reason for every goodness is due to Tawheed and worship of Allaah تعالى and obedience to His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. And as for all the evil in the world - the Fitnah (trial), the hardship, the drought, being overpowered by the enemy and other than that - then the reason for it is opposing the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and calling upon other than Allaah (i.e. Shirk).

So whoever sincerely contemplates on this, will find that this is the case – specifically in himself and in other than him, generally and specifically. And there is no might or power except with Allaah.

[Majmoo` al-Fataawa (15/25)]

Note: If one were to re-read the statement of Shaikh al-Islaam رحمه الله more keenly, they will see a distinct feature in the way he رحمه الله arranged those words.

When he رحمه الله mentioned “goodness”, he began with Tawheed and Worship of Allaah, and then mentioned obedience to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

But when he رحمه الله mentioned “evil”, he first mentioned disobedience to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم before Shirk.

Know the reason why?

Because it happens that among those who claim to be upon Tawheed, SOME of them intentionally oppose the Sunnah without realizing the grave error.

Opposing the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, in matters big or small, is the beginning of all destructions.

{And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad’s) commandment beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.} [Surah al-Noor (24): 63]

Imaam Ahmad رحمه الله said: “Do you know what the Fitnah is? The Fitnah is Shirk. May be the rejection of some of his words would cause one to have doubt and deviation in his heart and thereby be destroyed.”

One great example that nobody should forget is when the Archers رضي الله عنهم أجمعين failed the Prophet's command on the day of Uhud. The victory turned into defeat.

He replied: ‘How can I be while I am required by my Lord to perform obligatory acts of worship,by my Prophet (‘alayhi salaat wa salaam) to practice his Sunnah, by the two angels to improve my deeds, and my soul urges me to follow it,Shaytaan pushes me to commit evil deeds, the Angel of death is waiting to take my life, and my children are asking me to provide for them?’”

For He تعالى has commanded us to adhere to the Haqq (truth) and commanded us with Sabr (patience). So fitnah occurs either when the truth is neglected or when patience is neglected.” [Al-Istiqaamah 1/39]

“As for the Khawaarij, then they name the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaa`ah as Murji’ah. And the Khawaarij lie in their speech, rather they are the Murji’ah. They claim that no one other than them are upon Imaan and truth, and anyone who opposes them is a Kaafir.”

From the Beauty of Knowledge

From the Beauty of Knowledge

It is reported that Imām Ahmad b. Hanbal – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

Al-Shâfi’î saw me sitting in his circle, and there was some ink on my shirt I was trying to hide. He said, “Young man, why are you hiding it? Having ink on ones clothes is a sign of lofty conduct: to the sight it is black, but to the insight it is white (with the light of knowledge).”

It is reported that ‘Abdullâh b. Al-Mubârak – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

Ink on the clothes is the perfume of the scholars.

- Some put this in verse (from Arabic):

The ink-pot’s ink is the perfume of men
As saffron is the perfume of women
So the former befits the garments of those men
As the latter the garments of wives

It is reported that Imâm Ahmad said, seeing the students of hadîth approaching with their ink-pots:

These are the lanterns of Islâm.

"Who am I? And what am I?!"

From a man who said, “I saw signs of grief on Abu Abdullaah’s face [i.e., Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal] because someone had praised him. And [another time] it was said to him, ‘May Allaah reward you with good on behalf of Islaam.’ So he said, ‘Rather, may Allaah reward Islaam well on behalf of me. Who am I? And what am I?!’”

The Humble Heretic

The Humble Heretic

‘Alî b. Abî Khâlid – Allâh have mercy on him – reports:

I once said to Ahmad, “This shaykh – referring to an older man who was with us – is my neighbor. I told him not to keep the company of a certain person, and he would like to hear what you have to say about him: I am referring to Hârith Al-Qasîr (Al-Hârith Al-Muhâsibî). Many years ago, you saw me with him and told me not to sit with him nor speak with him. I have not spoken to him since that time. This shaykh, however, does sit with him. So what do you say?”

I saw Ahmad go red with anger, his eyes bulging; I had never before seen him like this. He started to say, “Him! May Allâh do such-and-such to him! Only those well-informed of him know what he really is, only those who really know him know what he is. Al-Mughâzilî, Ya’qûb and so-and-so sat with him, and he caused them to adopt the views of Jahm (Ibn Safwân, leader of the Jahmites). They were destroyed because of him.”

The old man said, “But Abû ‘Abdillâh, he reports hadîth, and he is mild and humble; he has done such-and-such [good works].” Abû ‘Abdillâh (Imâm Ahmad) became angry and began repeating, “Let not his humility and softness deceive you”. He also said, “Do not be fooled by his bowed head, he is an evil man; only those well-informed of him through experience know him. Do not speak to him – with all disrespect to him. Are you going to sit with everyone who narrates from Allâh’s Messenger – may the praise and peace of Allâh be upon him – though he be a heretic (mubtadi’)? No, with all disrespect.”

Identifying Ahl us-Sunnah and Ahl ul-Bid'ah By The Love and Hate of As.haab ul-Hadeeth

Identifying Ahl us-Sunnah and Ahl ul-Bid'ah

By The Love and Hate of As.haab ul-Hadeeth

Ja'far bin Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Qaadee said, "I heard Qutaibah bin Sa'eed say: When you see a man loving the People of Hadeeth, such as Yahyaa bin Sa'eed al-Qattaan, Abdur-Rahmaan bin Mahdee, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Ishaaq bin Raahawaih - and he mentioned some other people - then he is upon the Sunnah, and whoever opposes this then know he is an Innovator".

Ahmad bin Kaamil recited the following verses of poetry to Ja'far al-Khawaas:

Gone are the confederates of Innovation (As.haab ul-Bid'ah). And their rope weakened and then broke altogether. The League of Iblees that used to be a throng. And O people! Do they have in their innovation. A Faqeeh or an Imaam that is followed? The likes of Sufyaan, of ath-Thawr. Who taught the people the innermost realities of wara' (fear)? Or Sulaimaan of at-Taim. Who abandoned sleep out of the fear of [the day of] questioning. Or the Brave of Islaam, I mean Ahmad. That one who if the reciters were to come to blows with him. Would not fear their whip when they would frighten (therewith). Nay! And nor (would he fear) their sword when it would be brandished
Ahmad bin Sinaan al-Qattaan said, "There is no Innovator upon the earth except that he hates the People of Hadeeth, for when man innovates, (perceiving) the sweetness of hadeeth is removed from his heart."

Abu Nasr bin Sallaam al-Faqeeh, "There is nothing heavier upon the People of Deviation, and nor more hated to them, then listening to hadeeth and its being narrated with its isnaad".

[Abu Ismaa'eel] Muhammad bin Ismaa'eel at-Tirmidhee said: "I and Ahmad bin al-Hasan at-Tirmidhee were with the Imaam of the Deen, Abu Abdullaah Ahmad bin Hanbal and Ahmad bin al-Hasan said to him: 'O Abu Abdullaah, they mentioned the Ashaabul-Hadeeth (the People of Hadeeth) to Ibn Abee Qutaylah of Makkah and he said: 'The Ashaabul-Hadeeth are an evil people.' So Imaam Ahmad stood and while shaking off the dust from his garment he said: 'Zindeeq (heretic), zindeeq, zindeeq', [and he continued like this] until he entered his house."

From the Manners of a Wife with her Husband

It is reported that the wife of Imâm Sa’îd b. Al-Musayyib – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

We only ever used to speak to our husbands like you address your commanders and leaders: [we would supplicate for them when talking to them] “May Allâh keep you right!”, “May Allâh keep you well!”

Abû Nu’aym, Hilyatu Al-Awliyâ` 5:198.

After the death of his wife Umm Sâlih, Imâm Ahmad – Allâh have mercy on them, used to praise her. He once said:

In the thirty years she was with me, we never had a single word of disagreement.

Knowledge on the Mind

It is reported that Imâm Abû Dâwûd Al-Sijistânî – Allah have mercy on him – said:

Ahmad b. Hanbal never used to involve himself in the things of this world that people involved themselves in; but when knowledge was mentioned, he would speak.

Ibn Al-Jawzî Sifatu Al-Safwah 2:519.

It is reported that Al-Husayn b. Muhammad said:

Muhammad b. Ismâ`îl Al-Bukhârî was distinguished with three qualities – in addition to the rest of his praseworthy traits: He never spoke much, he never yearned for what people had. He would never occupy himself with other people’s affairs; all his attention was towards knowledge.

Some Statements of the Salaf on Ilmul-Kalaam

Some Statements of the Salaf
on Ilmul-Kalaam
(Theological Rhetoric and Philosophy‏)

Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee (d.204) said,

“My ruling regarding the people of Kalaam (theological rhetoric) is that they should be beaten with palm leaves and shoes and be paraded amongst the kinsfolk and the tribes with it being announced, ‘This is the reward of the one who abandons the Book and the sunnah and turns to theological rhetoric (kalaam).“

[Sharh 'Aqeedatut-Tahaawiyyah og Ibn 'Abdil-'Izz, p. 75]

Ibn ‘Abdil-Barr said, “The people of Fiqh and Aathaar in all the various towns and cities are agreed unanimously that the Ahlul-Kalaam (People of theological rhetoric) are but Ahlul-Bida’ waz-Zaigh (the People of Innovations and Deviation). And they are not considered, by all of the above, to be amongst the ranks of the Scholars (in truth).“

[Reported by Ibn Qudaamah in his Burhaan Fee Bayaanil-Qur'aan]

Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee said, “That a person is pout to trail with everything that Allaah has forbidden, besides Shirk, is better than that he looks at Kalaam (theological rhetoric).“

Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee also said, “If people knew what (misleading and destructive) desires are contained within theological rhetoric they would certainly flee from it as they would from a lion.“

Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee also said, “Whoever showed boldness in approaching theological rhetoric will never prosper.“

[Reported by Ibn Qudaamah in his Burhaan Fee Bayaanil-Qur'aan]

One of the Scholars of Ash-Shaash said:

“Every knowledge except that of the Qur’aan is a pre-occupationExcept for the Hadeeth and Fiqh (understanding) of the deenKnowledge is only that about which it is said,‘Haddathanaa…” (So and so narrated to us (a hadeeth))And what is besides thatAre but whisperings of the Shaytaan (Devils)”

Aboo Yoosuf, the companion of Aboo Haneefah, said,“Whoever sought knowledge by Kalaam (theological rhetoric) will turn a heretical apostate.“

Imaam Ahmad (d. 241) said, “The person of theological rhetoric will never prosper. And never do you see anyone looking into theological rhetoric except that in his heart is a desire for creating mischief.“

[Both the above narrations are reported Ibn Qudaamah in his Burhaan Fee Bayaanil-Qur'aan]

[Taken from "Foundations Of The Sunnah" Pp. 16-17]

Imam al-Barbahaaree (rahimahullah):

“Rhetoric (kalaam) causes disbelief, doubts, innovations, misguidance and confusion. May Allah have mercy upon you! Know that heresy, disbelief, doubts, innovations, misguidance and confusion about the religion have never occurred except through theological rhetoric (Kalam) and because of the people of theological rhetoric, argumentation, debating and disputation. How can a man plunge into argumentation, disputation and debatingseeing that Allah, the Most High, said: ‘None dispute regarding the Aayaat (revelations, signs, proofs) of Allah except those who disbelieve.’ (Soorah Ghaafir 40:4) You should submit to and be pleased with the narrations and the people of narrations, withhold and remain silent.” (The Explanation of The Creed of Imaam Al Barbahaaree)

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah):

“There is no analogical reasoning in the Sunnah and examples or likenesses are not to be made for it. Nor is it grasped and comprehended by the intellects or the desires. Rather it [consists of] following [and depending upon] it and abandoning the hawaa [desire].” (Foundations of the Sunnah)

“The person of theological rhetoric will never prosper. And never do you see anyone looking into theological rhetoric except that in his heart is a desire for creating mischief.’ (Reported by Ibn Qudaamah in his Burhaan fee Bayaanil-Qur’an)

“ For indeed, (indulging in) theological rhetoric (kalaam) in the matter of Qadar, the Ru’yah (seeing Allaah in the Hereafter), the Qur’aan and other such issues are among the ways that are detested and which are forbidden. The one Who does so, even if he reaches the truth with his words, is not from Ahlus-Sunnah, until he abandons (using) this mode of argumentation, [and until he] submits and believes in the Aathaar (the Prophetic Narrations & those of the Companions).” (Foundations of the Sunnah)

Imam Sufyaan ath-Thawree (rahimahullah):

repeated thrice: “This religion is based upon narrations not opinions, This religion is based upon narrations not opinions, This religion is based upon narrations not opinions.” (Sharaf Ashaabul Hadeeth)

Imam al-Awzaa’ee ( rahimahullah):

“Hold fast to the narrations of the Salaf, even if people were to abandon you. (And) Beware of the opinions of the people, no matter how much they beautify it with their speech.” (Majmoo’ al-Fataawaa vol. 12, p. 497)

Imam Ibn Hajar al ‘Asqalaani (rahimahullah):

“Their sayings with regards to censuring the people of Kalaam (philosophical speech and theology) are well known. The reason for such censure was that the people of ‘Kalam’ spoke about those matters which both the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘ alayhi wasallam) and his Companions (radhiyallaahu ‘ anhum) remained quiet about. It is established from Imam Maalik that there did not exist at the time of the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) nor that of Abu Bakr (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu) or 'Umar (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu), anything from these desires - meaning: the innovation of the Khawaarij, the Raafidah and the Qadariyah. Indeed, those who came after the first three excellent generations expanded upon matters which the Imaams of the Taabi'oon and those who followed them, rejected. The people of Kalam did not content themselves, until they filled the Deen with issues and the sayings of the philosophers. They made this philosophy the basis and the fundamental principle to which everything was referred back to, and all that which opposed it from the narrations of the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘ alayhi wasallam), his Companions (radhiyallaahu ‘ anhum) and the Salaf who followed them ; then ta’weel (false interpretation) was made of them, even if they were averse to the result. Nor did they content themselves with just this. They claimed that what they had compiled was the noblest branch of knowledge and the most deserving to be acquired; and that those who did not use what they had laid down, then they were from the laymen and the ignorant ones. So delight is for the one who clings to what the Salaf were upon, and distances himself from the innovations that the khalaf (the latecomers who opposed the ‘aqeedah and manhaj of the Salaf) introduced. However, if one cannot keep away from it, then let him take only that which he needs and let the way of the Salaf be his intended goal.” (Fath al Baaree 13/253)

Imam Ahmad on Rafidas

Imam Ahmad on Rawafid

“Imam al-Khilaal said: ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid informed me saying: I heard Abu ‘Abd Allah [Imam Ahmad] say: ‘Whosoever reviles the Companions, then I fear disbelief for him like the Rawafid‘. Then he said, ‘Whosoever reviles the Companions of the Prophet, then we do not believe he is safe from having rejected the Religion‘.” (Sunnah lil-Khilaal, 3:493)

“Abu Bakr mentions I asked Abu ‘Abd Allah concerning the individual that verbally abuses Abu Bakr, Umar and A’ishah. He replied ‘I do not regard them to be Muslim.‘ He further says ‘I have heard Malik say, ‘Whoever verbally abuses the Sahabah of Rasul Allah he has no share in Islam‘.’ ” (Sunnah lil-Khilaal, 3:493)

“Zakariyya bin Yahya mentions he has heard Abu Talib mention that he mentioned to Abu ‘Abd Allah concerning an individual who verbally abuses Uthman and people have mentioned this fact to me that he speaks ill of Uthman. He replied they [he ones who speak ill] are zindiqs.” (Sunnah lil-Khilaal, 3:493)

“Yusuf bin Musa mentions that Abu ‘Abd Allah was asked – this was mentioned to me by Ali bin ‘Abd al-Samad – He replied I asked Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal concerning a Rafidi neighbor who greats me , should I answer his Salam? He replied ‘No‘.” (Sunnah lil-Khilaal, 3:493)

“Muhammad bin al-Hussain mentions Fadhal bin Ziyad narrates that Abu ‘Abd Allah said, ‘Don’t speak to Rawafid‘.” (Sunnah lil-Khilaal, 3:494)
