What is the soundness of the statement concerning the hellfire coming to an end? Shaykh Fawzaan

What is the soundness of the statement
concerning the hellfire coming to an end?

Shaykh Fawzaan

Q: What is the soundness of the statement which is attributed to Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (May Allah have mercy upon him) concerning the hellfire vanishing (i.e coming to an end)?

A: You are not in need of (busying yourself with) this issue, and you will not be asked about it on the day of judgement. It is not from the affairs of your religion, (rather) it is from those inquisitive issues. Leave it. It is attributed to Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (May Allah have mercy upon him) and Allah knows best, however it is not an issue from which there is a religious benefit.

I saw during my night journey some men whose lips were being clipped with clippers of fire. I said, ‘Who are these people, Jibreel?’ He replied, ‘These are the people from your followers who gave sermons commanding the people with righteousness, yet forgetting to practice it themselves.

Would Fire Consume the Marks of Postration?

Would Fire Consume the Marks of Postration?

Abu Hurairah reported: "The Messenger of Allah said: "There will be a bridge laid across Hell." And I will be the first to pass over it. The only invocation that the Messengers then would say is: "O Allah safeguards us".  "It is a slippery (bridge) on which there are clamps and (hooks like) thorns that scratch people according to their deeds, some will be totally safe, and some will be safe after receiving some scratches, and some will fall down into Hell (fire). After Allah, Exalted is He, finishs judging His slaves, He takes out from Hell some of those who beared witnessed that there is deity worthy of worship but Allah, so He orders His angels to bring them out. When angels took for them, they recognise then by the marks of postration. Because Allah, the Most High, forbade fire to consume the marks of postration. They take them out, thought their bodies were burnt, so they pour on them water, called the water of life. They will grow on its banks, as a seed carried by the torrent grow."

Ahmad in his Musnad (2/275-276), Sahih al-Bukhari (1/204) and Sahih Muslim (182)

Worldly Fire compared to the Fire of Hell

Worldly Fire compared to the Fire of Hell

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet said: “This fire of yours which burns the son of Adam (in this world) is one seventieth of the heat of the Hell. They said: “We swear by Allah, our fire is quite enough.” The Prophet said: “It is sixty nine times more and each part of it is like the heat of your fire.”1

‘Adl ibn Hatim related: The Messenger of Allah said: “Allah, Exalted is He, shall speak to every one of you without [the need for] an interpreter. When you look to your right side you will find only deeds you have done [in this worldly life]. When you look to left side you will only find the deeds you have done  [in this worldly life]. When you look in front of you there will be Hell so save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity.”2

Pride is as great a sin as polytheism

Pride is as great a sin as polytheism

Pride, with its consequences, remains a great sin opposing the purpose for which Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) created His creation, just as the greatest sin, polytheism. Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) created His creation and revealed His Book in order that complete obedience be devoted to Him, Alone. Therefore, He (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) forbade the entry into Paradise for polytheists and any of those who have the weight of a mustard seed of pride in their hearts.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SINNER AND A KAFIR REMAINING IN HELL

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SINNER AND A KAFIR REMAINING IN HELL

Abdul Aziz ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him): There are some major sins mentioned which state the offender will dwell in Hell forever. There are various kinds of major sins. The scholars have a general rule regarding major sins: every sin mentioned which Allah promises a person Hell, His anger, His curse or a capital punishment in this world. The sins that don’t have these consequences are considered acts of disobedience.( i.e minor sins.)
Some major sins mention a person will remain in Jahannam forever.i.e  Zina, murder and Riba. Allah says about Riba:

but whoever returns [to Riba (usury)], such are the dwellers of the Fire – they will abide therein (Al-Baqarah 275)
Additionally, it has been mentioned that a person who commits suicide will remain in Hell forever. These acts of disobedience and others similar state that the offender dwells in the Fire forever, however the dwelling mentioned here ,isn’t the one Allah promises the Kafir. There are two kinds of dwelling in Hell.
1-      The dwelling in Hell forever. This is for the Kafir. Allah says :

They will long to get out of the Fire, but never will they get out therefrom, and theirs will be a lasting torment (Al-Ma’idah 37).

This is the deathless state of the disbelievers in Hell. We seek Allah’s refuge.

2-      Remaining in Hell for a long period of time. The time he spends in Hell will ultimately end. This type of abiding in Hell applies to the person who kills himself or others. Allah says:

whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein and the Wrath and the Curse of Allah are upon him (Al-Nisa'a 92)

This duration in Hell is temporary. This applies to the person who dies while devouring Riba. This length in Jahaanam isn’t forever, only Allah knows the exact duration. The person could dwell in Hell one year and another person one hundred years. Another person will remain in Hell for a thousand years.  People will stay in Hell longer or shorter than others according to their sins.
Nonetheless, their duration in Hell will end at some point in time. The arabs used to say to the person who stayed for a long time in a place: “You stayed forever”
A poet said:

“They established something so they remained forever” (Questions in the Majmu’ 1/37)

  • If a sinner enters Hell he will exit due to his belief in Allah alone.

  • Many sinners won’t be forgiven, but will be punished in Hell according to their sins.

  • There are an enormous amount of texts from the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) that mention the sinners will burn in Hell due to their sins.

Explaining that people are tested in the grave

Explaining that people are tested in the grave

118 - Explaining that people are tested in the grave

Q: When a human being dies and is buried, will they be punished during the period between death and the Day of Resurrection if they are wrong-doers, or they will be punished for a period of time according to their evil deeds? We would be grateful if you could elaborate on this point, may Allah bless you! .
A: All praise be to Allah! The Sahih (authentic) Hadiths reported about Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) stress that when one is buried in their grave, two angels come to them and ask them about their lord, their Deen and their messenger. If they answer these questions firmly, Allah will open for them a gate to Paradise from which blessings and the fragrance of Paradise come to them. Also, a gate to Hellfire is opened for them to see the abode of Hellfire from which Allah has saved them and given them an abode in Paradise instead. As for disbelievers, they will experience the opposite as a gate to Hellfire is open for them from which torture, foul odors and a fierce hot wind of Hellfire come to them. A gate to Paradise is open for them to see their abode in Paradise which they would have been given if they had done good, but since they disbelieved in Allah, Allah will deprive them of an abode in Paradise. The literal meanings of the Sunnah and the Holy Qur'an stress that the righteous will enjoy blessings, whereas the disbelievers will experience punishment in the grave. However, it is not known how they will be punished and how long such punishment will continue!
(Part No. 4; Page No. 317)
The entire matter is referred to Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He). The same applies to the righteous and how they will enjoy pleasure in the grave. A believer has to do nothing but to believe in what is mentioned in the Prophetic Hadiths. As for the way the righteous enjoy blessings and the way the disbelievers experience punishment in the grave and whether such blessings or punishment will continue or not, the entire matter is referred to Allah (Exalted be He). Allah (Glorified be He) informs us regarding Fir`aun (Pharaoh) : The Fire, they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon. And on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): "Cause Fir‘aun’s (Pharaoh) people to enter the severest torment!" This Ayah indicates that they are exposed to Hellfire, morning and afternoon, not continuously. Thus, punishment or pleasure is determined by Allah with regard to the details and the way of punishment or pleasure. However, we know that a believer enjoys blessings in the grave, whereas a disbeliever experiences punishment in the grave, but the manner of pleasure or punishment belongs to Allah (Exalted be He). We have nothing to say about this point except for what is mentioned in the Sunnah that a gate to Paradise is open for the believer, from which blessings and fragrances of Paradise come to him and a gate to Hellfire is open for the disbeliever, may Allah save us!
It is related in the Two Sahih (authentic) Books of Hadith (by Al-Bukhari and Muslim), As narrated by Ibn `Abbas, Once the Prophet, while passing through one of the graveyards of Medina or Mecca, heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, "These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid)." The Prophet then added, "Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends)." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that those two persons were being tortured for two sins, but he did not explain how they were being tortured. As for the sinful, nothing in the Prophetic Sunnah or the Noble Qur'an indicates
(Part No. 4; Page No. 318)
how they enjoy blessings or how they undergo punishment in the grave. Whoever die while committing a sin from which they have not repented such as adultery, drinking alcohol or being ungrateful to parents may be exposed to the danger of punishment, but none knows anything about this matter except for Allah (may He be Exalted and Glorified). However, sinful persons are neither treated like disbelievers nor like the believers, as they will be in a rank between the two parties. In the Hereafter, the sinful may be punished or pardoned by Allah and admitted into Paradise. They may be entered into Hellfire, but they will not remain there forever. They will be punished according to their sins and they will be then taken out of Hellfire to be admitted into Paradise. Sinful persons are no more than wrong doers, as they are neither believers nor disbelievers, but Paradise will be their final abode.

Q: Will those experiencing pleasure in their graves enjoy continuous blessings until being admitted into Paradise in the Hereafter, or may they later be punished on the Day of Resurrection?
A: There are authentic Hadiths reported about Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) that indicate that a dead person is tested in his grave where they will be asked about their lord, their Deen and their prophet. If they give correct answers to these questions, a gate to Paradise is open for them from which blessings, the fragrance of Paradise comes to them and their grave become a garden of the gardens of Paradise. Such blessings will remain till the Day of Resurrection when they will be taken from their grave to Paradise. If one fails this test saying, "Aa, Aa, I do not know, as I heard people say such and such thing, so I followed them," they will be punished in the grave, may Allah forbid! Then, they will be subject
(Part No. 4; Page No. 319)
Allah's Will. If they are sinful, they will be under Allah's Will, but if they are disbelievers, they are taken from their graves to Hellfire, may Allah forbid, as Allah (Glorified be He) says: Verily, Allâh forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills

“Why is it that I never see Mika’il smiling?”

It has been narrated with a Sahih chain:

Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah said to Jibril:  “Why is it that I never see Mika’il smiling?” Jibril replied: “Mika’il has not smiled since Hell was Created.”

“Seventy years before it reached the bottom”

Abu Umamah heard the Prophet say:

“If there was a huge stone as big as seven khalifaat stones, and it was thrown from the edge of Hell it would fly through it for seventy years before it reached the bottom”.

The Coldness of Zamhareer

The Coldness of Zamhareer

Reference: Tafseer Asmaa Allaah al Husnaa See article
Author: Number of Scholars

Ibnul Qayyim stated:

Allaah’s statement:

{ Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink. Except boiling water, and Ghasaaqaa”} [Al Naba: 24-25]
It is Zamhareer, it burns them with its extreme cold just as it burns them with its heat. It was also stated by Mujaahid and Muqaatil that it is the peak of coldness.
[Badaa’i al Fawaa-id: 2/244]

Al Haafidh ibn Rajab stated:

Allaah the Elevated rendered what is in this world, in terms of heat and cold, related to the heat and cold of the Hell fire, and an evidence for it, and this is why it is recommend to seek refuge from the Hell fire when one experiences this [i.e. the heat and cold].

As was narrated by ‘Uthmaan ad Daarimee and others, the Hadeeth of Daraaj, on the authority of Abu Haytham…that Abu Hurayrah narrated to him that the Prophet- صلى الله عليه وسلم - said:

If a man says on a hot day; ‘There is no deity worthy of worship in truth but Allaah, how hot it is today! O Allaah! Save me from the heat of Jahannam [the Hell fire].’
Allaah would say to Jahannam; “Indeed a servant of Mine has asked Me for salvation from your heat, indeed I hold you as a witness that I have granted him salvation.”

And if a servant says on an extremely cold day; ‘There is no deity worthy of worship in truth but Allaah, how cold it is today! O Allaah! Save me from the Zamhareer of Jahannam.’

Allaah would say to Jahannam; “Indeed a servant of Mine has sought refuge with me from your Zamhareer, indeed I hold you as a witness that I have granted him refuge.”

The companions asked: “What is the Zamhareer of Jahannam?

He replied: “It is an abode where the disbeliever is thrown, he would be torn apart by its extreme cold.” [1]

[Fat-h al Baaree: 3/71]

Al ‘Aynee stated:

There is nothing to prevent Zamhareer from emitting from the same Hell fire, because what is meant by ‘the Hell fire’ is its place, which is Jahannam, and there is a level of Zamhareer in it.

It was said that there is no contradiction here in combing between heat and cold in the Hell fire, because the Hell fire is Jahannam, and it has been narrated that parts of it are fire and other parts are Zamhareer, and they are not in the same place, it is impossible that they are combined in one place.

I say [Al ‘Aynee]: The One who created the dominion including ice and fire, is able to combine two opposites in one place. In addition, the Hell fire is from the affairs of the unseen, and the affairs of the unseen are not to be compared to the affairs of this world.

[‘Umdat al Qaaree: 7350]

The punishment of Satan and his followers

The punishment of Satan and his followers

(Part No. 3; Page No. 510)

Third question from Fatwa no. 6304
Q 3: What is the punishment of Satan? Will he enter Hellfire just like a Muslim person who has never performed any of the obligations imposed by Allah, or is Hellfire divided into ranks like Jannah (Paradise)?
A: The punishment of Satan and his followers is Hellfire, as Allah declares this in the Qur'an saying, (Allâh) said: "The Truth is - and the Truth I say - That I will fill Hell with you [Iblîs (Satan)] and those of them (mankind) that follow you, together." (Surah Sad, 38: 84-85). Hellfire is divided into ranks, just like Jannah. The scholars declared this in Allah's saying, Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them. (Surah Al-Nisa', 4: 145). Allah also says, Is then one who follows (seeks) the good Pleasure of Allâh (by not taking illegally a part of the booty) like the one who draws on himself the Wrath of Allâh (by taking a part of the booty illegally - Ghulul)? - his abode is Hell, and worst, indeed is that destination! They are in varying grades with Allâh, and Allâh is All-Seer of what they do. (Surah Al-'Imran, 3: 162-163).
May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!
