Thinking before speaking

Thinking before speaking

Al-Imaam ash-Shafi’ee said: "When a person intends to speak, then upon him is to think before he speaks. Then if it is evident that there is some benefit then he may speak. However, if there is doubt then do not speak, until it becomes clear (about whether it is beneficial or not)."

KNOWLEDGE OF ALLAAH IS LIGHT

 KNOWLEDGE OF ALLAAH IS LIGHT

Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee (رحمه الله) said,

"I complained to Wakee' about the poorness of my memory. So he directed me to abandon disobedience. And informed me that the knowledge of Allaah is light. And that the light of Allaah is not given to the disobedient."¹

Imaam Maalik said to Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee (رحمه الله),

"I see that Allaah has placed light in your heart so do not extinguish it with the darkness of disobedience."²

Poem by Imaam ash-Shafi'i: "Let days go forth.."

Poem by Imaam ash-Shafi'i: "Let days go forth.."

A beautiful poem by Imaam ash-Shafi'i (rahimahullah)

Let days go forth and do as they please
And remain firm when settled is the Decree

Don't be afraid of what happens by night
For the affairs of this world are not to last

And be a man, strong in the face of calamities
And let your nature be that of kindness and honesty

If your faults become too much in front of the people
And you wish that they were to be concealed,

Then know that kindness covers all faults
And how many faults are kept hidden by kindness!

No sadness lasts forever, nor any happiness
And you shall not remain in poverty, or any luxury

Generosity cannot be hoped from the miserly
For no water exists in the Fire for the thirsty

Your provision will not be decreased due to life's delays
And it cannot be increased due to your haste

If, in your heart, you possess contentment
Then you and those who possess the world are equal

And for him upon whose horizon death descends,
No earth can offer him protection, nor any sky

Indeed, the earth of Allah is certainly vast
But if decree descends, then the world constricts

Let days be the ones that betray you at all times
For no cure can avail a person of death

‘Cannot We Be Brothers?’

‘Cannot We Be Brothers?’

Yunus as-Sadafi’ said:

I have never seen a wiser man than ash-Shafi`ee, I was arguing with him one day about an issue and I left him.

One day, he met me, held my hand and said:

‘Cannot we be brothers, even if we disagree about something?’ “

A Few Days Of Patience

A Few Days Of Patience

Imaam ash-Shaafi`ee (d.204H) - rahimahullaah - said:

"O my soul! It is not, except a few days of patience;
As if the extent were but a few dreams.
O my soul! Pass quickly on through this world;
And leave it, for indeed life lies ahead of it."

From the Beauty of Knowledge

  From the Beauty of Knowledge

It is reported that Imām Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

Al-Shāfi’ī saw me sitting in his circle, and there was some ink on my shirt I was trying to hide. He said, “Young man, why are you hiding it? Having ink on ones clothes is a sign of lofty conduct: to the sight it is black, but to the insight it is white (with the light of knowledge).”

It is reported that ‘Abdullāh b. Al-Mubārak – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

Ink on the clothes is the perfume of the scholars.

– Some put this in verse (from Arabic):

The ink-pot’s ink is the perfume of men

As saffron is the perfume of women

So the former befits the garments of those men

As the latter the garments of wives

It is reported that Imām Aḥmad said, seeing the students of ḥadīth approaching with their ink-pots:

These are the lanterns of Islām.

Do not look at the Hadeeth, but look at the Isnaad to see if the Isnaad is saheeh, otherwise do not be deceived by the Hadeeth if the Isnaad is not authentic.’

[From: ‘Siyaar ‘Alaam an-Nubala’ 9/188]

2. From Umar bin AbdulAzeez (d. around 100 A.H.) that he wrote to some people:

‘No one can have an opinion against the Sunnah which was established by the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.’

[From ‘Jamia Bayyan al-Ilm’ 1/781]

3. From Malik ibn Anas (d. 179 A.H.) who said:

‘Every ones statement can be taken or left except for the inmate of this grave -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.’

[From: ‘Siyaar ‘Alaam an-Nubala’ 8/93]

4. From Uthmaan who said:

‘A man came to Maalik and asked him about an issue. So Maalik said to him: ‘The Messenger of -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said such and such’. The man said to him ‘Do you hold that view?’ Imam Malik said:

<< And let those who oppose the Messenger’s commandment (i.e. his Sunnah) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.>> [Noor: 63]’

5. From Maalik ibn Anas (d. 179 A.H.) who said:

‘The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- established Sunnan, following them is following the Book of Allaah, and it is completion of obedience to Allaah, and strength upon the Deen of Allaah. It is not permissible for anyone to change it, nor to look into that which opposes the Sunnah. Whosoever seeks guidance by it, then he is guided.’

[From: ‘Siyaar ‘Alaam an-Nubala’ 8/98]

6. From Yahya bin Yahya at-Tameemi (d. 226 A.H.) who said:

‘I heard Abu Yusuf saying: Everything that I have given a verdict about, then indeed I take it back except for that which is in agreement with the Book and the Sunnah.’

7. From ar-Rabia’ who said: ‘I heard Shaafi’ee saying:

[From: ‘Siyaar ‘Alaam an-Nubala’ 10/34]

8. From Maalik ibn Anas (d. 179 A.H.) who said:

Four things to strengthen the intellect

Four things to strengthen the intellect

Ash-Shaafi'ee:

"Four things strengthen the intellect: To avoid superfluous speech, to use Siwaak, to sit with righteous people and to sit with the scholars."

(al-Aadaab ash-Shar'iyyah (3/30))
