The Virtues of Surah al-Asr – Shaykh Hammad al-Ansari

The Virtues of Surah al-Asr

 – Shaykh Hammad al-Ansari

TRANSLATOR: Zayd Khālid
SOURCE: Majmū’ at-Tarjumah pg. 490, Dār al-Imām Muslim edition.

Shaykh Ḥammād al-Anṣārī said,

If a person were to analyse Sūrah al-ʿAṣr, he would increase in certainty that the Qur’ān is the Speech of Allāh, the Most High. This is because there is no one (besides Him) capable of summarising all of virtue in three verses. Imām ash-Shāfiʿī said, “If the people were to contemplate this chapter, it would suffice them.” Sūrah al-ʿAṣr is an explanation of the whole Qur’ān.

Hadith: "He is not from us..."

Hadith: "He is not from us..."

Prophet Muḥammad Ṣallallāhu-ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam said:

“He is not from us who does not recite Qurʾān in a beautiful voice.”

Imām Ibn Bāz Raḥimahullāh said:

“This (Ḥadeeth) is a proof that beautifying one's voice and being attentive while reciting Qurʾān is something recommended for the submissiveness (Khushūʿ) of the Qārī and the one listening to him and it benefits both.”

Reading The Qur’aan At The Graveyard

Reading The Qur’aan At The Graveyard

Shaykh Muhammad Al-Uthaymeen [رحمه الله] said:

❝As for the graveyards then they are not a place for reading of the Qur’aan, but rather they are a place for giving Salam upon the dead and making Dua for them, not a place for making Dua, nor to make Dua to them.

So the deceased are not to be made Dua to, nor to make [general] Dua at their graveside. But rather Dua is made for them for mercy and forgiveness because they are in dire need of Dua.❞

DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY HIS RECITATION OF THE QUR'ĀN

DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY HIS

RECITATION OF THE QUR'ĀN

Muhammad b. al-Husayn (رحمه الله) said:

Whoever sees the diligence of a Kharijite who rebels against the [Muslim] ruler -Regardless of whether the ruler is just or tyrannical- and this person rebels, assembles a faction, untethers his sword and deems it lawful to fight against the Muslims, should not be deceived by his recitation of the Qur'ān, the length of his standing in prayer, his frequent fasting or his proficiency in discussing knowledge; if he is upon the doctrine of the Khawārij.

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-ʿAbbād (حفظه الله)

“Make a habit of reciting the Qurʾān and pondering upon it in Shaʿbān, for the soul is upon that which it has contracted habitually. The salaf used to say when the month of Shaʿbān entered: ‘This is the month of the reciters.’”

The Diagnosis and the Cure

The Diagnosis and the Cure

It is reported that Qatādah – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

Verily the Qurān guides you to your disease and your treatment: as for your disease, it is your sins; and as for your treatment, it is to seek the forgiveness of Allāh.

WHAT IS THE PROOF FROM THE QUR’AAN THAT SINS PREVENTS (A PERSON) FROM UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AAN?

WHAT IS THE PROOF FROM THE

QUR’AAN THAT SINS PREVENTS

(A PERSON) FROM UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AAN?

Answer:

Allaah the most high says:  كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

[”Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn.’’ [83:14]   Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) derived from this ayah that sin is a cause of not (being able) to understand the Qur’aan.

An Easy Way to Keep Devils Out of Your House by Reciting Two Blessed, Ancient Verses

An Easy Way to Keep Devils Out of Your

House by Reciting Two Blessed, Ancient Verses

An-Nu’maan ibn Bashir narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Indeed Allaah wrote a Book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, He sent down two aayahs from it with which He ended Surah al-Baqarah—if they are recited for three nights in a home, no Shaitaan shall come near it.”

Saheeh at-Targheeb, no. 1476, al-Albaani said, “Saheeh.” [Translation taken from English translation of Al-Tirmidhi, slightly edited.]

The two verses are:

‘Āmanar-Rasūlu bimā ‘unzila ‘ilayhi mir-rabbihi wal-Mu’uminūna ۚ kullun ‘Āmana billāhi wa Malā’ikatihi wa Kutubihi wa Rusulihi Lā nufarriqu baina ‘aĥadin mir-Rusulihi ۚ wa qālū sami`nā wa ‘Aţa`nā ۖ  Ghufrānaka Rabbanā wa ‘ilaikal-Maşīr.

“The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allaah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, “We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers.” And they say, “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, Our Lord, and to You is the return (of all).””

Lā yukallifullāhu nafsan ‘illā wus`ahā ۚ Lahā mā kasabat wa `alaihā maktasabat ۗ
Rabbanā lā tu’uākhidhnā ‘in-nasīnā ‘aw ‘akhţa’nā ۚ
Rabbanā wa lā taĥmil `alainā ‘işran kamā ĥamaltahu `alalladhīna min qablinā ۚ
Rabbanā wa lā tuĥammilnā mā lā ţāqata lanā bihi ۖ
Wa`fu `annā waghfir lanā warĥamnā ۚ ‘Anta mawlānā fānşurnā `alal-qawmil-kāfirīn.

“Allaah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector! And give us victory over the disbelieving people.””

Using the Qur’aan as a shifaa’ (cure)

Using the Qur’aan as a shifaa’ (cure)

Question: The first question is from Sister Mujahida from New York, she says: My aunt has a daughter who is about 5 and can barely speak and recently started walking. The doctors said there isn’t anything physically wrong with her and she is just slow. Some claim that she has ‘ayn (عين – evil eye) on her and someone suggested that she read Surah Ikhlaas X number of times and she will start walking and talking. My aunt did this for a while and my cousin started to walk. However, I was trying to explain it to her if it was practised by the Sahaabah, but she says, “It is a surah from the Qur’aan and Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says it’s a book that cures, then what’s wrong with me reading it?” The questions are:

i. How do I explain this issue to her?

ii. Is there any ruqyah from Qur’aan and Sunnah that I can give her and tell her to do on her daughter?

Answer: About the question, as I understand it this lady is reading suratul-Ikhlaas and she said inshaa’ Allaah in suratul-Ikhlaas there is a cure. We should know that Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says in the Qur’aan:

وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلاَ يَزِيدُ الظَّالِمِينَ إَلاَّ خَسَارًا

{And We send down of the Qur’ân that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islâmic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss.} [Al-Israa 17:82]

This cure includes the cure from doubts, cure from physical illness and also from the illness of the soul i.e. shak an-nafsiyyah (شك النفسية – doubting of the soul). So the Qur’aan is a shifaa’ (شفاء – cure). We know this, and we know that there are special surahs that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه و سلم has guided us to, and some aayaat, and we know the Qur’aan as a whole is ash-shifaa’ (The Cure). When you read Qur’aan Inshaa’ Allaah with the intention ofshifaa’, and knowledge (understanding), it is shifaa’.

There are special surahs and aayaat like al-Faatihah, and the beginning aayaat of surah al-Baqarah, and ayatul-Kursi, and suratul-Ikhlaas, suratul-Kaafiroon, the muwaddataan (Surah al-Falaq and an-Naas). There are verses which Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم tells us that if you read them on a sick then Inshaa’ Allaah they will be cured. There is also a saying of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم that I think she can find it in the Sunnah book (Hisnul Muslim) and if she asks her Imaam, he will guide her to it like:

Place your hand at the site of the pain and say: Bismillah ‘In the name of Allaah’ (three times) Then supplicate seven times:

أَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ وَ قُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَ أُحَاذِرُ

A’oodhu billaahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir

‘I take refuge in Allaah and within His Omnipotence from the evil that I feel and am wary of.’[6]

Also from the Sunnah of Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم is to recite:

أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ، رَبَّ النَّاسِ، وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَماً

Adhibilba’s Rabbanaas wasfi antashaafee laa shifaa’a illa shifaauka shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqamaa[7]

So the Qur’aan is shifaa’ and there are special surahs that we can say on the sick person, and he can read them himself. However, specifying a special surah or special aayaat that the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم did not mention, is wrong. There is nothing that specifies this and specifying a number of times to read this surah also does not come from Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم, and the Sahaabah رضي الله عنهم did not do this, so we should follow the way of using the ruqyah shar’iyyah (الشرعية الرقية – permissible incantation). He should not be very harsh regarding this. She is reading Qur’aan and surah al-Ikhlaas has special meanings in it, so I think it is okay to read the Qur’aan but not specific (parts); it is better to read the whole of surah al-Faatihah, Ayatul-Kursi, suratul-Baqarah Wallaahu A’lam.

It is from the Mercy of Allaah that the Qur'aan is still with us

It is from the Mercy of Allaah
that the Qur'aan is still with us

{Should We then take this Reminder away from you and ignore you because you are a nation who has transgressed all limits?} [Surah al-Zukhruf (43):5]

Imaam Ibn Katheer رحمه الله commented on this Aayah:

{Shall We then take away the Reminder (this Qur’aan) from you, because you are a nation who has transgressed all limits?} means: “do you think that We will forgive you and not punish you, when you do not do as you have been commanded?” This was the view of Ibn `Abbaas Abu Saaleh, Mujaahid and al-Suddi, and was the view favored by Ibn Jareer.

{Shall We then take away the Reminder (this Qur’aan) from you} Qataadah said: “By Allaah, if this Qur’aan had been taken away when the first generations of this Ummah rejected it, they would have been doomed, but Allaah by His mercy persisted in sending it and calling them to it for twenty years, or for as long as He willed.”

What Qataadah said is very good, and his point is that Allaah, by His grace and mercy towards His creation, did not stop calling them to the truth and to the wise Reminder, i.e., the Qur’aan, even though they were heedless and turned away from it. Indeed, He sent it so that those who were decreed to be guided might be guided by it, and so that proof might be established against those who were decreed to be wretched.

--end of quote

Shaikh `Abdul Rahmaan bin Nasr al-Sa`dee رحمه الله said:

{Shall We then take away the Reminder (this Qur’aan) from you} meaning: “Should We turn away from you, and stop the revelation of the Dhikr (The Qur’aan) from you, and pay no attention to you because of your rejection and refusal to implement it? Rather, We will reveal it for you and make plain for you everything in it (so that you may understand it). So if you believe in it and are guided, then it is for your own success. But if you don’t, then the proof will be established against you, for you have been made aware of your affairs.

--end of quote

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Allaah said: {The son of Aadam denied Me and he had no right to do so. And he reviled Me and he had no right to do so. As for his denying Me, it is his saying: He (Allaah) will not remake me as He made me at first - and the initial creation [of him] is no easier for Me than remaking him. As for his reviling Me, it is his saying: Allaah has taken to Himself a son, while I am the One, the Everlasting Refuge. I begot not nor was I begotten, and there is none comparable to Me.}” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4975)]

Moving the lips while reciting the Koran

Moving the lips while reciting the Koran

Shaykh Bin Baz

Q: Some of the people take the Mushaf and look in it without moving their lips, is the one who does this considered to be reading the Koran, or is a must that he pronounce the words and must it be audible in order to receive the reward for reading the Koran? And will the person be rewarded by (only) looking into the Mushaf? Please benefit us, may ALLAH reward you.

A: There is nothing wrong with looking into the Koran to reflect upon it and to contemplate and understand the meanings, but this person is not considered to be reading the Koran and he will not receive the virtue of reading the Koran unless he pronounces the (words of) Koran; even if those around him do not hear him. This is based on the statement of the Prophet peace and blessings are upon him: “Read the Koran because verily it will come on the Day of Judgment as an intercessor for its companion”. (Narrated by Muslim) And what the Prophet peace and blessings are upon him intended by “its companions” was those who work by it, as comes in other hadith. And he, peace and blessings are upon him said: “Whoever reads a letter from the Koran then he will have a good deed, up to ten times”. (From Timirdee and Ad-Daarami with a good chain) And the person is not considered to be reading the Koran unless he pronounces the words, as the people of knowledge have stated; and with Allah lies success.

Reciting Surat Al-Mulk every night

Reciting Surat Al-Mulk every night
'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood said: "Whoever reads 'al-Mulk' every night, Allaah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam), we used to call it al-mani'ah (that which protects). In the Book of Allah, there is a chapter [and] whoever recites it every night has done very well." [Sahih at-Targhib wat-Tarhib, no. 1475]

Imam Ahmad recorded from Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) that Allah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) said, "Verily, there is a chapter in the Qur'an which contains thirty Ayat that will intercede on behalf of its reciter until he is forgiven. (It is): 'Blessed be He in Whose Hand is the dominion.'"

[This Hadith was collected by At-Tirmidhi and the four Sunan Compilers. At-Tirmidhi said concerning it, "This is a Hasan Hadith."]

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) saying, "There is a Surah in the Qur'an which contains thirty Ayat which kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven. This Surah is 'Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.' (Surat Al-Mulk 67)." [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud].

Commentary from Riyad-us-Saliheen: This Hadith means that on the Day of Resurrection this Surah will intercede with Allaah for the forgiveness of its reciter. This Hadith has been narrated (in Arabic) in the past tense because, like the past indefinite, its occurrence is definite and not open to inquiry. At some places, however, it has also been narrated in the present tense.

He (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk (in Arabic) before sleeping.

The seventh question of Fatwa no. 2677
Q 7: Which is the best book of Tafsir (exegesis of the meanings of the Qur’an) among the old and contemporary books?
A: Judging which are the best books of Tafsir differs depending on the capability and capacity of the reader. Anyway, the best books are the Tafsir of Ibn Jarir Al-Tabary and Ibn Kathir and other books of Tafsir that adopt the Athar-based (Narrations from the Companions) approach of Tafsir. These are simpler in expression, clearer in teaching and conveying the meanings of Qur’an, closer to the truth, more clarifying to the objectives of Shari‘ah (Islamic law), along with citing the relevant authentic Hadiths and Athars,
(Part No. 4; Page No. 179)
and resorting to Muhkamat (decisive legislative, self-contained Qur'anic verses, closed to any interpretation) for interpreting Mutashabihat (similar and dependent Qur'anic verses, open to more than one interpretation or whose meaning is known only to Allah).
May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

Is it permissible to recite the Qur'an collectively?

Is it permissible to recite the Qur'an collectively?

(Part No. 4; Page No. 148)
The first question of Fatwa no. 4394
Q 1: What is the religious ruling on reciting the Qur’an collectively? Please support your answer with evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
A: Reciting the Qur’an is an act of worship and one of the best Qurbahs (good deeds by which Allah's Pleasure is sought). The original principle regarding Qur’an recitation is that it should be according to the actual practice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet, may Allah be pleased with them). It was not authentically reported from him or any of his Sahabah that they recited collectively; rather, each one of them would recite individually or one of them would recite and the others would listen. It was authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Keep to my Sunnah (way) and to the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs after me. He (peace be upon him) said: Anyone who introduces anything into this matter of ours (Islam) that is not part of it will have it rejected. According to another narration: Anyone who does an action that is not in accordance with this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected.
It was reported that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked `Abdullah ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) to recite the Qur’an to him, he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite the Qur’an to you when it has been revealed to you?' He (peace be upon him) said, 'I like to hear it from others.'
May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

The Heart’s Best Medicine

The Heart’s Best Medicine

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, says:

In short, there is nothing more beneficial for the heart than reading the Qur`aan and with contemplation and reflection. The Qur`aan encompasses all the levels of the travellers, the conditions of the workers, and stations of those possessing knowledge. It is the Qur`aan that generates love, desire, fear, hope, repentance, reliance, pleasure, entrustment, gratitude, patience, and the rest of the different states that are life to the heart and perfection of it. Likewise, it repels all the rebuked characteristics and actions that cause the corruption and ruin of the heart.

If people were to possess a realization of what recitation of the Qur`aan with contemplation contains, they would devote themselves to it at the expense of anything else. When the person reads it with reflection and he comes across an aayah that he is in need of, for the cure of his heart, he repeats it, even if he does so a hundred times or the whole night. Hence, to recite a single aayah of the Qur`aan with contemplation and reflection is better than reciting the Qur`aan to completion without any contemplation or reflection. It is also more beneficial for the heart and more conducive to attaining eemaan and tasting the sweetness of the Qur`aan.

IS IT NECESSARY TO BURY THE ASHES OF MATERIAL THAT HAD ALLAAH’S NAMES, EVEN AFTER IT HAS BEEN BURNT?

IS IT NECESSARY TO BURY THE ASHES OF MATERIAL THAT HAD ALLAAH’S NAMES, EVEN AFTER IT HAS BEEN BURNT?

Question:
When disposing Qur’aan or anything with Allaah’s name on it, do we have to bury the ashes of the burnt Qur’aan or can it just be thrown away?
Answer:
Bismillahi wassalatu wassalamu alaa rasoolillahi amma ba’ad
If the name of Allaah azza wajal has completely disappeared by being burnt and is not visible (if the Name has become ash), then there is no longer any respect due for this paper.

Moving the lips while praying, making supplications, and reading the Qur’aan

In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful
Brothers and sisters the following is extremely important for the one who would like to receive the reward for reciting the Qur’aan during the month of Ramadan, or for the one who would like to receive the benefits for reading the morning and evening supplications, rather this is a must for every Muslim who would like for their five daily prayers to be accepted.
The following is a summary translation taken from various sources Translated by Rasheed Barbee

Moving the lips while praying, making supplications, and reading the Qur’aan by Sheikh Muhammad Bazmool
Sheikh Muhammad Bazmool said in his explanation of ‘The Prophet’s prayer described’ peace and blessings are upon him; by Sheikh Albaani may Allah have mercy upon him; in the section ‘Reading aloud and silently in the five daily prayers and other than that’ after mentioning that the guidelines in reciting silently is that the tongue is moved.
The second affair: If we know the guidelines for reading aloud and silently, we say: What some of the people do, standing in prayer with their lips closed not moving their tongue until they finish the prayer; they do not move their tongue while reading during the standing which is for reading, and they don’t move their tongue during the supplications not in rukoo nor when raising from rukoo, and they don’t move their tongues in sujud nor when raising from sujud, nor do they move their tongues while sitting for the tashahhud; so I say to them, your prayer is invalid! This is because a pillar of the prayer was not fulfilled, and the pillar that was not fulfilled is reading the Al Fatiha, and because they left off all of the obligations in all of the pillars, because they are not reading in the prayer.
Therefore it is a must when you read that you move your tongue and according to some of the Scholars of fiqh it is a must that you move your tongue and that you hear yourself read.
And this is an important principle: Many of the people come and they say, ‘We always read the morning and evening supplications and we seek refuge in Allah, but despite doing this, we are still affected by such and such and such and such still occurs.
We say, the morning and evening supplications should be read like you read aloud and silently (in the prayer); so if you say them silently it is a must that you move your tongue, there is no benefit in just moving your eyes across the lines (of the dua book, for example) and then you say, ‘I’m reading’…reading silently. This is not called reading and this is not called speech in the Arabic language.
Reading and speech in the Arabic language requires that the tongue is moved.
And with this, as you know it comes in the hadith that the Sahaba may Allah be pleased with them, used to know that the Prophet, peace and blessing are upon him was reading by the moving of his beard. And this is from the proof that the Messenger (prayer and peace are upon him) used to move his tongue and his lips even when he was reading silently.

==========
