The Virtues of Surah al-Asr – Shaykh Hammad al-Ansari

The Virtues of Surah al-Asr

 – Shaykh Hammad al-Ansari

TRANSLATOR: Zayd Khālid
SOURCE: Majmū’ at-Tarjumah pg. 490, Dār al-Imām Muslim edition.

Shaykh Ḥammād al-Anṣārī said,

If a person were to analyse Sūrah al-ʿAṣr, he would increase in certainty that the Qur’ān is the Speech of Allāh, the Most High. This is because there is no one (besides Him) capable of summarising all of virtue in three verses. Imām ash-Shāfiʿī said, “If the people were to contemplate this chapter, it would suffice them.” Sūrah al-ʿAṣr is an explanation of the whole Qur’ān.

A Prophetic Condemnation of Racism

A Prophetic Condemnation of Racism

Ibn ‘Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allāh () gave a sermon to the people on the day of the conquest of Makkah, and he said: “O you people! Verily Allāh has abolished the arrogance of pre-Islamic ignorance from you, and its reverence to your forefathers. So, now there are two types of men: A man who is righteous, has piety and is honourable before Allāh, and a wicked man who is miserable and insignificant to Allāh. People are children of Ādam and Allāh created Ādam from the earth. Allāh said: {O you people! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allāh is the one who has most piety. Verily, Allāh is ‘Alīm [All-Knowing], Khabīr [Perfectly Aware]} (49:13).”

Ibn al-‘Arabī said in commentary of this narration:

“During the days of pre Islamic ignorance, nobility would be based on particular features as opposed to piety. So Allāh nullified all forms of pride and nobility based on inherent or inherited features and only left that [nobility] connected to piety; which is to obey Allāh and adhere to His legislation. Whereby the origin of man is one, from clay. And their father is one, Ādam, who is the origin [from which humans were born], Ādam and Ḥawa” [Eve].

The Repentance of pharaoh’s Magicians

The Repentance of pharaoh’s Magicians

Allaah (The Most High) said:

 قَالُوا لَن نُّؤْثِرَكَ عَلَىٰ مَا جَاءَنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالَّذِي فَطَرَنَا ۖ فَاقْضِ مَا أَنتَ قَاضٍ ۖ إِنَّمَا تَقْضِي هَٰذِهِ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا

”They said: “We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world.” [Soorah Taha: Ayah: 72]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

And when Eemaan became established in their hearts, they came to know that the punishment of the worldly life is easier than the punishment of the afterlife and less abiding; and that what they are to receive of reward for Eemaan in the afterlife is greater, more beneficial and everlasting.

Working for others as an Employee is Not dishonorable

Working for others as an Employee is Not dishonorable

Is it they who would portion out the Mercy of your Lord? It is We Who portion outmbetween them their livelihood in this world, and We raised some of them above others in ranks, so that some may employ others in their work. (Sura Az-Zukhruf 43:32)

Tafsir Shinqeeti: This means some people working for others because the system and order of the world depends on this. This is from the wisdom of Allah the Exalted, that He makes this poor person strong and capable of work while making the weak person unable to work, but He gave them money so they can employ the strong poor person. Thus, the strong person benefits from the money of the weak while the weak benefits from the work of the strong. Consequently, the livelihood is organized for each other them.

Patience, Prayer, Firmness and Listening to Upright Scholars Required When Oppressors Become Extremely Oppressive: [Lessons to Learn From The Behaviour of Ancient Criminals Prior to Their Wretched End]

Patience, Prayer, Firmness and Listening to

Upright Scholars Required When Oppressors

Become Extremely Oppressive: [Lessons to

Learn From The Behaviour of Ancient

Criminals Prior to Their Wretched End]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

[يَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كُنتُمۡ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ فَعَلَيۡهِ تَوَكَّلُوٓاْ إِن كُنتُم مُّسۡلِمِينَ – And Musa (Moses) said: “O my people! If you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims (those who submit to Allah’s Will). [10:84]; Meaning: Place your trust in Allaah, return to Allaah by asking for steadfastness, aid, assistance, victory etc. Then Allaah [The Most High] says that Moosaa’s [alayhis-salaam] people replied, saying: [فَقَالُواْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلۡنَا رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةً۬ لِّلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ – They said: In Allah we put our trust. Our Lord! Make us not a trial for the folk who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers (10:85)]; Meaning: Do not allow them to overpower us and thus we are put to trial in the affairs of our religion, or that they are given victory and thus we are put to trial and they say, “Had they (i.e. the believers) being upon the truth, they would not have been defeated. [وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحۡمَتِكَ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِين – And save us by Your Mercy from the disbelieving folk. (10:86)]; Meaning: Save us from their evil, so that we can practice our religion in the correct manner it should be practised- by establishing its laws and being able to manifest it without being opposed or prevented.

Then Allaah [The Most High] says that He commanded Moosaa and Haaroon [alayhimas-salaam], saying: [ وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَأَخِيهِ أَن تَبَوَّءَا لِقَوۡمِكُمَا بِمِصۡرَ بُيُوتً۬ا وَٱجۡعَلُواْ بُيُوتَڪُمۡ قِبۡلَةً۬ وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ‌ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ – And We inspired Musa (Moses) and his brother (saying): “Take dwellings for your people in Egypt, and make your dwellings as places for your worship, and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give glad tidings to the believers].

So when the trial became severe and they faced increased persecution at the hands of Fir’awn and his chiefs, Allaah [The Most High] commanded Moosaa and Haaroon (alayhimas-salaam] to command the believers to take dwellings in which they can perform the prayer when they are unable to perform it their places of worship; for indeed the prayer is an aid in all affairs. And besides this, they were given glad tidings that they will be given victory and that a time is coming in which they will be able to manifest their religion; for ease will come after a period of hardship.

WHAT IS THE PROOF FROM THE QUR’AAN THAT SINS PREVENTS (A PERSON) FROM UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AAN?

WHAT IS THE PROOF FROM THE

QUR’AAN THAT SINS PREVENTS

(A PERSON) FROM UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AAN?

Answer:

Allaah the most high says:  كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

[”Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn.’’ [83:14]   Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) derived from this ayah that sin is a cause of not (being able) to understand the Qur’aan.

TEACHING THE PEOPLE MAGIC

TEACHING THE PEOPLE MAGIC

Teaching the People Magic by the Muhaddith, Shaykh, Allamaa’ Muhammad Nasiruddeen al-Albaani

Translated by Abbas Abu Yahya

Shaykh Albaani was asked the question: What is the interpretation of the noble Ayaah:

وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَى مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ

<< They followed what the Shayateen gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaiman. Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayateen disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels >>   [Baqarah: 102]

The Shaykh answered:

‘There is no doubt that there is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars of Tafseer regarding this Ayaah. However, that which I personally find to be the strongest opinion is that its meaning is that Allaah – Azza wa Jal- sent down two Angels to teach the people magic, at a time when magic was hugely oppressive and had become widespread. Magic had become confused with the miracles of some of the Prophets. For example, in the story of Musa -Alayhi as-Salaam- and the magicians, Pharoah wanted to mislead the people, at the hands of magicians, away from Musa’s Dawa’ (call) to the truth.

What Pharoah manifested was magic. Then, as we know, Allaah -Azza wa Jal- cut off the actions of the magicians; they submitted and believed in The Lord of all that exists.

Therefore, their knowledge of magic after that point was a means to distinguish between invented matters, magic and reality.

So, in reality, when Musa -Alayhi as-Salaam- threw down his staff:

<< فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ >>  << and behold! It swallowed up straight away all the falsehoods which they showed>> [Al-Araaf: 117] this was something real which all the people believed. The magicians knew, due to their familiarity with magic that their practice of magic was astray and deceit, which had no basis in reality. So when they were unexpectedly confronted with the miracle of Musa -alayhi as-Salaam – the difference between reality and magic became apparent.

<< They said: “We believe in the Lord of all that exists). >> [Al-Araaf: 121]

So the Wisdom of Allaah -Azza wa Jal – dictated, the sending of two Angels: Haroot and Maroot to teach the people magic. This was not to teach them magic for the sake of it, but so that they (the people) could then distinguish it from the magic used by many evil imposters and liars in those days to oppress the people, subjugate them and enslave them.

This is similar to what was mentioned in the story of the young man and the monk, perhaps you remember it. It is important to mention the summary of that here:

The king at that time – the king of the people of the ditch as mentioned in the Qur’aan[1] – used to employ a magician to enslave the people. When the magician felt that he was getting old, frail and elderly he said to the king, ‘Chose a young man from the people for me so that he can be a successor for you.’ Why did he say this? So that he could continue to enslave the people with this magic.  This was how the kings in the past were, they would exploit the people by using magic. So Allaah -Azza wa Jal- sent two Angels to teach everyone magic – unlike the king’s magician, (the king of the people of the ditch) when he said to the king, ‘Chose a young man for me’, because it did not suit him to spread knowledge of magic amongst the people. This is because, in that case, the people would then have realised how the king had subjugated them with the use of magic.

Therefore, the Wisdom of Allaah -Azza wa Jal- dictated that He send two Angels to teach the people magic, in order for them to be able to distinguish between magic and miracles. Also, because magic undoubtedly leads to corruption, Allaah said, in the same context of the same story:

«وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّى يَقُولا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلا تَكْفُرْ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِ »

<<  but neither of these two Angels taught anyone such things till they had said, “We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us).” And from these Angels people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife >>  [Baqarah: 102]

So they went to teach magic for a distinct purpose. However, this learning could turn into a tribulation when they learnt that which harmed them and did not benefit them such as that by which they cause separation between man and his wife. This is my opinion of the Tafseer of this Ayaah, and Allaah knows best.’

Recompense for not paying Zakat

Recompense for not paying Zakat

Allah ta’ala says:

وَلاَ يَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَبْخَلُونَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ هُوَ خَيْراً لَّهُم بَلْ هُوَ شَرٌّ لَّهُمْ سَيُطَوَّقُونَ مَا بَخِلُوا بِهِ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَاثُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ {And let not those who covetously withhold of that which Allah has bestowed on them (a) of His Bounty (Wealth) think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakat). Nay, it will be worse for them; the things which they covetously withheld shall be tied to their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Well-Acquainted with all that you do..} (AI-Imran:180).

This refers to those who practice avariciousness; whatever Allah has granted them in the form of wealth, authority, or knowledge they have been ordered to spend a certain level from it on His creation. On the contrary, they become avaricious and keep Allah´s given wealth hidden from the people, thinking that whatever they are doing is better for them, (whereas this is contrary to the truth); rather, this is the worst of things for them in this world and the hereafter. What they covetously withheld will be hung around their necks on the Day of Resurrection, that it, the object of their avariciousness will be made into a heavy collar and placed around their necks, a means of punishment for them. This is evident from an authentic Prophetic hadith, in which the Prophet said,

“Anyone to whom Allah has given wealth but he does not pay its Zakah, on the Day of Recompense, his wealth will be presented to hin in a shape of bald-headed poisonous male snake with two poisonous glands in its mouth. It will encircle itself around his neck and bite him on his cheeks saying, ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure”. (b)

The Prophet also referred to this verse as evidence.
These people believed their avariciousness to be a means of benefit and reverence for them, whereas it proved to be contrary, and the same avariciousness became a cause of disadvantageousness and punishment for them.

It is Allah who will inherit the heavens and the earth, meaning, only Allah is the Absolute Ruler, Who has complete dominance, and only He is the Absolute King. Since all property eventually returns to its real owner, so people will leave this world in a state in which they will neither have any dirhams or dollars with them, nor any wealth and property. Allah says elsewhere,

Verily! We will inherit the earth and whatsoever is thereon. And to Us they all shall be returned (Surah Maryam: 40)

Let us ponder as to how Allah has mentioned the initial means and the last means, and how both these mentions warrant that one must never be greedy or practice avariciousness about things granted by Allah. In the first instance, Allah describes that whatever a person owns is in reality not his property, but is all from Allah’s benefaction and blessing on him. If Allah’s benefaction and kindness was not with him, then he could not have acquired any of these things. Therefore, when a person abstains from giving some of these things to Allah’s people, he is in fact stopping Allah’s benefaction and kindness from reaching His people. It is a natural consequence of Allah’s benefaction on a person that he, in turn, becomes beneficent on Allah’s creation, as Allah describes elsewhere,

and do good as Allah has been good to you. (al’Qassas:77)

First: When a person entertains the belief that whatever he has due to Allah’s benefaction and kindness on him, he will never abstain from sharing this blessing with others, because he is aware that this will not offer him any loss; rather, this deed (of giving to others) will in fact increase his wealth, make his heart stronger, increase his faith, and protect him from accidents and calamities.

Second: Allah has clearly described that whatever is in His servant’s possession is eventually going to return to Him and He will be its heir, and Allah is indeed the best heir. What then is the point of being a miser when everything we have will ultimately leave our hands and go to someone else?

Third: Allah has described the means of recompense. He says, Allah is well aware of all that you do. When Allah is aware of all our deeds, then the fact is known to all that He will indeed reward the good deeds and punish the bad ones.

Therefore, whoever has even a semblance of faith in this heart, will never stop from spending in Allah’s cause, because he knows that this will earn him rewards; he will never be a miser because he knows that this will be a cause for punishment.

It is from the Mercy of Allaah that the Qur'aan is still with us

It is from the Mercy of Allaah
that the Qur'aan is still with us

{Should We then take this Reminder away from you and ignore you because you are a nation who has transgressed all limits?} [Surah al-Zukhruf (43):5]

Imaam Ibn Katheer رحمه الله commented on this Aayah:

{Shall We then take away the Reminder (this Qur’aan) from you, because you are a nation who has transgressed all limits?} means: “do you think that We will forgive you and not punish you, when you do not do as you have been commanded?” This was the view of Ibn `Abbaas Abu Saaleh, Mujaahid and al-Suddi, and was the view favored by Ibn Jareer.

{Shall We then take away the Reminder (this Qur’aan) from you} Qataadah said: “By Allaah, if this Qur’aan had been taken away when the first generations of this Ummah rejected it, they would have been doomed, but Allaah by His mercy persisted in sending it and calling them to it for twenty years, or for as long as He willed.”

What Qataadah said is very good, and his point is that Allaah, by His grace and mercy towards His creation, did not stop calling them to the truth and to the wise Reminder, i.e., the Qur’aan, even though they were heedless and turned away from it. Indeed, He sent it so that those who were decreed to be guided might be guided by it, and so that proof might be established against those who were decreed to be wretched.

--end of quote

Shaikh `Abdul Rahmaan bin Nasr al-Sa`dee رحمه الله said:

{Shall We then take away the Reminder (this Qur’aan) from you} meaning: “Should We turn away from you, and stop the revelation of the Dhikr (The Qur’aan) from you, and pay no attention to you because of your rejection and refusal to implement it? Rather, We will reveal it for you and make plain for you everything in it (so that you may understand it). So if you believe in it and are guided, then it is for your own success. But if you don’t, then the proof will be established against you, for you have been made aware of your affairs.

--end of quote

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Allaah said: {The son of Aadam denied Me and he had no right to do so. And he reviled Me and he had no right to do so. As for his denying Me, it is his saying: He (Allaah) will not remake me as He made me at first - and the initial creation [of him] is no easier for Me than remaking him. As for his reviling Me, it is his saying: Allaah has taken to Himself a son, while I am the One, the Everlasting Refuge. I begot not nor was I begotten, and there is none comparable to Me.}” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4975)]

The Beast

 The Beast

Allaah تعالى said:

{And when the Word is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth a beast for them, to speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in Our Ayaat.} [Surah Al-Naml (27): 82]

Imaam Ibn Katheer رحمه الله said:

This is the beast which will emerge at the end of time, when mankind has become corrupt and neglected the commands of Allaah and changed the true religion. Then Allaah will cause a beast to emerge from the earth. It was said that it will be brought from Makkah, or from somewhere else, as we shall discuss in detail below, if Allaah wills. The beast will speak to people about matters. Al-Hasan and Qataadah said, and it was also narrated from `Ali رضي الله عنه that it will speak words, meaning, it will address them. Many Ahaadeeth and reports have been narrated about the beast, and we will narrate as many of them as Allaah enables us to, for He is the One Whose help we seek.

Imaam Ahmad recorded that Hudhayfah bin Asid Al-Ghifari رضي الله عنه said, "The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه السلام came out from his room while we were discussing the matter of the Hour. He said:

“The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the rising of the sun from the west; the smoke (Ad-Dukhan); emergence of the beast; the emergence of Ya'juj and Ma'juj; the appearance of `Isa bin Maryam عليه السلام; the Dajjal; and three land cave-ins, one in the west, one in the east and one in the Arabian Peninsula; and a Fire which will emerge from the midst of Yemen, and will drive or gather the people, stopping with them whenever they stop for the night or to rest during the day.” [This was also recorded by Muslim and the Sunan compilers from Hudhayfah, in a Mawquf report. At-Tirmidhi said, "It is Hasan Sahih.'' It was also recorded by Muslim from Hudhayfah in a Marfu` report. And Allaah knows best.]

Muslim bin Al-Hajjaj recorded (in his Saheeh) that `Abdullah bin `Amr said, "I memorized a Hadeeth from the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه السلام which I never forgot afterwards. I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه السلام say:

«إِنَّ أَوَّلَ الْآيَاتِ خُرُوجًا طُلُوعُ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا، وَخُرُوجُ الدَّابَّةِ عَلَى النَّاسِ ضُحًى، وَأَيَّتُهُمَا مَا كَانَتْ قَبْلَ صَاحِبَتِهَا فَالْأُخْرَى عَلَى إِثْرِهَا قَرِيبًا»

“The first of the signs to appear will be the rising of the sun from the west, and the emergence of the beast to mankind in the forenoon. Whichever of them appears first, the other will follow close behind it.”

In his Saheeh, Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه said that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه السلام said:

«بَادِرُوا بِالْأَعْمَالِ سِتًّا، طُلُوعَ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا، وَالدُّخَانَ، وَالدَّجَّالَ، وَالدَّابَّةَ، وَخَاصَّةَ أَحَدِكُمْ، وَأَمْرَ الْعَامَّة»

“Hasten to do good deeds before six things appear: the rising of the sun from the west; the smoke; the Dajjal; the beast; the (death) of one of your favorite, or general affliction.” [This was recorded by Muslim alone.]

Muslim also recorded that Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه said that the Prophet صلى الله عليه السلام said:

«بَادِرُوا بِالْأَعْمَالِ سِتًّا: الدَّجَّالَ، وَالدُّخَانَ، وَدَابَّةَ الْأَرْضِ، وَطُلُوعَ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا، وَأَمْرَ الْعَامَّةِ، وَخُوَيْصَّةَ أَحَدِكُم»

“Hasten to do good deeds before six things appear: the Dajjal; the smoke; the beast of the earth; the rising of the sun from the west; and the (death of one of your favorite) or general affliction.”

Ibn Majah recorded from Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه السلام said:

«بَادِرُوا بِالْأَعْمَالِ سِتًّا: طُلُوعَ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا، وَالدُّخَانَ، وَالدَّابَّةَ، الدَّجَّالَ، وَخُوَيْصَّةَ أَحَدِكُمْ، وَأَمْرَ الْعَامَّة»

“Hasten to do good deeds before six things appear: the rising of the sun from the west; the smoke; the beast; the Dajjal; and the (death of one of your favorite) or general affliction.” [He was the only one who recorded this version.]

Abu Dawud At-Tayalisi recorded from Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه السلام said:

“A beast will emerge from the earth, and with it will be the staff of Musa and the ring of Sulayman, peace be upon them both. It will strike the nose of the disbelievers with the staff, and it will make the face of the believer bright with the ring, until when people gather to eat, they will be able to recognize the believers from the disbelievers.”

It also was recorded by Imam Ahmad, with the wording:

فَتَخْطِمُ أَنْفَ الْكَافِر بِالْخَاتَمِ، وَتَجْلُو وَجْهَ الْمُؤْمِن بِالْعَصَا، حَتَّى إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْخِوَانَ الْوَاحِدِ لَيَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَقُولُ هَذَا: يَا مُؤْمِنُ، وَيَقُولُ هَذَا: يَا كَافِر

“It will strike the nose of the disbelievers with the ring, and will make the face of the believer bright with the staff, until when people gather for a meal, they will say to one another, O believer, or O disbeliever.” [It was also recorded by Ibn Majah. Graded as Dha`eef by Shaikh al-Albaanee in his checking of Ibn Majah (811)]

Ibn Jurayj reported that Ibn Az-Zubayr described the beast and said, "Its head is like the head of a bull, its eyes are like the eyes of a pig, its ears are like the ears of an elephant, its horns are like the horns of a stag, its neck is like the neck of an ostrich, its chest is like the chest of a lion, its color is like the color of a tiger, its haunches are like the haunches of a cat, its tail is like the tail of a ram, and its legs are like the legs of a camel. Between each pair of its joints is a distance of twelve cubits. It will bring out with it the staff of Musa and the ring of Sulayman. There will be no believer left without it making a white spot on his face, which will spread until all his face is shining white as a result; and there will be no disbeliever left without it making a black spot on his face, which will spread until all his face is black as a result, then when the people trade with one another in the marketplace, they will say, `How much is this, O believer' `How much is this, O disbeliever' And when the members of one household sit down together to eat, they will know who is a believer and who is a disbeliever. Then the beast will say: `O so-and-so, enjoy yourself, for you are among the people of Paradise.' And it will say: `O so-and-so, you are among the people of Hell,'

This is what Allaah says:

وَإِذَا وَقَعَ الْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِم أَخْرَجْنَا لَهُمْ دَآبَّةً مِّنَ الاٌّرْضِ تُكَلِّمُهُمْ أَنَّ النَّاسَ كَانُوا بِـَايَـتِنَا لاَ يُوقِنُونَ

{And when the Word is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth a beast for them, to speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in Our Ayaat.}

What Is More Fitnah The Feet Or The Face?

What Is More Fitnah The Feet Or The Face?
Regarding Allaah’s statement, “…and let them not stamp their feet, so as to reveal what they hide from their adornment.” [Noor(24):31]
Ibn ‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله  says:
“This means that a woman must not strike her foot so as to let it be known what she conceals (from her adornment), such as her ankle bracelets or anything else that she adorns herself with for a man. So is a woman is forbidden (in this aayah) from stamping her feet, for fear of causing fitnah for a man, due to what he hears rom the sound of her ankle-bracelet or its types, then how about exposing the face?
Which of the two is a greater cause for fitnah? That a man hears the sound of tthe ankle-bracelet produced by the foot of a woman, not knowing who she is, nor her beauty nor if she is young or old or if she is unattractive or beautiful. Which of these two is a greater fitnah? This, or that he looks at a woman’s uncovered face that is perhaps beautiful, fair, young, bright, enticing, and which is perhaps beautified with that which attracts fitnah (temptation) and calls for the prohibited look?
Indeed, every man that has an interest in women knows which of the two is a greater fitnah and which is more deserving of being covered and concealed.”

Friday is called Al-Jumu`ah

Friday is called Al-Jumu`ah because it is derived from Al-Jam`, literally, gathering. The people of Islam gather weekly, on every Friday in the major places of worship. It was during Friday when Allah finished the creation, the sixth day, during which Allah created the heavens and earth. During Friday, Allah created Adam, and he was placed in Paradise, and ironically, it was a Friday when he was taken out of Paradise. It will be on a Friday when the Last Hour will commence. There is an hour during Friday, wherein no faithful servant asks Allah for something good, but Allah will give him what he asked for. All of this is based upon Hadiths in the authentic collections. In the ancient language Friday was called, `Arubah. It is a fact that previous nations were informed about Friday, but they were led astray from it. The Jews chose Saturday for their holy day, but Adam was not created on Saturday. The Christians chose Sunday, which is the day the creation was initiated. Allah chose Friday for this Ummah, because it is the day the creation was finished .Al-Bukhãri and Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

(We are the last (to come) but the first on the Day of Resurrection, though the former nations were given the Scriptures before us. And this was their day (Friday) the celebration of which was made compulsory for them, but they differed about it. So, Allah gave us guidance to it, and all other people are coming after us: the Jews tomorrow and the Christians the day after tomorrow.''

This is the wording of Al-Bukhãri in another narration of Muslim;

(Allah diverted those who were before us from Friday. For the Jews there was Saturday, and for the Christians there was Sunday. Allah then brought us and guided us to Friday. He made them; Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and it is in this order they will come after us on the Day of Resurrection. We are the last of among the people of this world and the first among the created to be judged on the Day of Resurrection.)

The Definition of "Tabarruj"

Allaah azza wa jal mentions in his Noble Book:

"And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves immorally (tabarruj) like that of the Days of Ignorance. And establish the prayer and give the Zakaat and obey Allaah and His Messenger" (Surah Al-Ahzaab:33)

Ibn Katheer (rahimahmullaah) said: Mujahid said: "A woman would go out and walk amongst men (i.e intermingling). This was the Tabarruj of the Day of ignorance.

Qatadah said: "The women would walk out, swaggering and flirting (with men) so Allaah forbade them from doing that"

Muqatil bin Hayyan said: "Tabarruj is when a woman puts a Khimar on her head but not fastening it properly so her necklaces, earrings and neck, and all of that can be seen. As a result of this, these are all exposed from her. This is Tabarruj"

(Mukhtasar Tafseer Ibn katheer, volume 3, page 94)

Imam Al-Qurtubee (rahimahullaah) said: "From the ways of Tabarruj is that a woman wears two transparent garments that describe her body"

(Tafseer Al-Qurtubee, volume 12, page 310)

Imam Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Naasir As-Saiadee (rahimahullaah) said: This (ayah) means: Do not go out whilst you are beautified or perfumed, as the women of the Days of Ignorance used to do since they did not have any knowledge or religious characteristics.

(Tafseer Ibn Sa'adee, volume 6, no.107)

Imam Al-Albanee (rahimahullaah) said: "Tabarruj is when a woman exposes her adornment, body features and all that she is obligated to cover which invites the desires of men"

(Mar'at-il-Muslimah, page 54)

The Messenger of Allaah (may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "And the worst of your women are the ones who commit Tabarruj, who strut around in arrogance. They are the hypocrites. None from among them (i.e. these women) will enter Paradise except (those who are) like the rare crow."

(Reported by al-Bayhaqi in his Sunan 7/82) and authenticated by al-Albanee in his as-Saheehah (4/1849)

Commenting on this hadeeth, Imaam al-Albaanee (rahimahu Allah) said: "What is meant by the rare crow is that which has a red beak and red legs, as occurs in a hadeeth that states the small amount of women that will enter Paradise. (The hadeeth Imaam al'Albaanee is referring to is the one by 'Amr bin al-Aas who said: "One day we were with the Messenger of Allaah on this mountain path when he said: "Look! Do you see anything? We said: We see a crow that is very strange. Its beak and its legs are red." So Allaah´s Messenger said: " No one among will enter Paradise except for those who have the similitude of this crow in strangeness." (Reported by Ahmad 4/197 and Abu Ya'laa 1/349, and authenticated by al'Albaanee in as-Saheehah (4/1850).)

This is since there are very few crows that match this type of description." Silsilaat ul Ahadeeth as'Saheehah vol.4, no.1849.

From the causes of Fitan

From the causes of Fitan

Allaah تعالى says: {And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad's) commandment beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.} [Surah al-Noor (24): 63]

Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said: “(It may be that) Stones are soon to descend upon you from the heavens! I say to you: ‘Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said...’ and you say to me: ‘Abu Bakr and Umar said!?’”

Imaam Ahmad رحمه الله said: “Do you know what the Fitnah is? The Fitnah is Shirk. May be the rejection of some of his words would cause one to have doubt and deviation in his heart and thereby be destroyed.”

[The quotes of Ibn `Abbaas and Imaam Ahmad have been taken from Kitaab al-Tawheed of Shaikh Muhammad Ibn `Abdul Wahhaab, Chapter #38]

Shaikh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said: “Fitnah (trials and tribulations, destruction in the land) does not occur except when the commandments of Allaah are neglected. For He تعالى has commanded us to adhere to the Haqq (truth) and commanded us with Sabr (patience). So fitnah occurs either when the truth is neglected or when patience is neglected.” [Al-Istiqaamah 1/39]

Imaam Mujaahid Ibn Jabar al-Makhzoomee

Imaam Mujaahid Ibn Jabar al-Makhzoomee

His Birth and Lineage:

His name is Mujaahid Ibn Jabar, his kunyah was Abul-Hajjaaj and his lineage was Abul-Hajjaaj Mujaahid Ibn Jabar al-Makhzoomee al-Makkee. He was from the famous Arab tribe of Banu Makhzoom. He was born in 20H or 21H during the Caliphate of Umar (radi-Allaahu ‘anhu).

He was a well known teacher and explainer of the Qur'aan and a famous preserver of hadeeth.

His Teachers and Those he Narrated from:

He learnt hadeeth from the illustrious companions, the likes of:
  • Sa'ad Ibn Abee Waqaas,
  • Ummul-Mu'mineen Aa'ishah,
  • Abu Hurairah,
  • Umm Haanee,
  • Abdullaah Ibn Umar,
  • and the Mufassirul-Qur'aan (Explainer of the Qur'aan) Abdullaah Ibn Abbaas.
May Allaah be pleased with all of them.

He studied with Ibn Abbaas for sometime, learning the explanation of the Qur'aan. As a result of this he possessed great knowledge.

His Students and Those who Narrated from him:
  • Qataadah,
  • Hakam Ibn Utaibah,
  • Amr Ibn Deenaar,
  • A'amash,
  • Mansoor Ayoob,
  • Ibn A'un,
  • Umar Ibn Dharr.
Ibn Katheer (not the author of Tafseer Ibn Katheer), Amr Ibn E'laa and Ibn Maheesan learnt recitation and the knowledge of the explanation of the Qur'aan from him.

His Works:
  1. Tafseer Mujaahid (2 Volumes) - he did not write this tafseer - it is all based on narrations from him. This book has been printed in Islamabad, Pakistan.
The Scholars Praise for Imaam Mujaahid:

Imaam adh-Dhahabee said,
"The whole Ummah is agreed upon Mujaahid's greatness and using him for evidence. The authors of the six books of hadeeth have also narrated from him."
Imaam Mujaahid states that he recited the Qur'aan 3 times to Ibn Abbaas (radi-Allaahu 'anhu). After reciting every verse to him he would ask the reason behind the revelation of the verse.

Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said,
"Mujaahid studied the Qur'aan with Ibn Abbaas, he stopped and questioned him about each and every verse and noted all of his comments. That is why (Sufyaan) ath-Thawree said, 'If the comments of Mujaahid reach you then it is enough.' This is also the reason why Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee and Imaam Bukhaaree relied on Mujaahids explanations. Similarly Imaam Ahmad and others of his like, who have commented on the Qur'aan, quote the words of Mujaahid more than the words of any other person."
As mentioned above, Imaam Bukhaaree, in his Jaami as-Saheeh, in Kitaab at-Tafseer, has mentioned many statements of Mujaahid.

Qataadah said,
"From the people alive, he (Mujaahid) was the most knowledgeable person in the explanation of the Qur'aan."
Ibn Juraij would say,
"Learning and hearing hadeeth from Mujaahid is more beloved to me than my family and wealth."
Khaseef said,
"In this era Mujaahid had the most knowledge about the explanation of the Qur'aan."
Imaam Mujaahid said,
"Often when I would go on a journey, Abdullaah Ibn Umar would hold the strap of my ride and stand as an attendant."
A'amash said,
"I used to think that Mujaahid was destitute when I saw him wear simple and inexpensive clothes. I used to think he was a donkey herder who had lost his donkey and was upset due to this. However when he used to speak on scholarly points then it was as if diamonds were emanating from his mouth."
Hameedah A'raj said,
"Mujaahid would say Allaahu Akbar (Allaah is The Greatest) after each Soorah from Wa-Dhuha to the end of the Qur'aan."
A'amash said,
"Mujaahid liked to see strange things. Once he went to Hadhramaut to look at a well of some sort. Another time he went to Baabil to look at Haroot and Maroot. He informed the ruler of his intentions and he (the ruler) called a magician and instructed him to take Mujaahid and show him Haroot and Maroot. The magician was a jew. The jewish magician said to Mujaahid, 'There is a condition and that is you can not say Allaah.' So he took him to a castle. When they reached a certain point he uprooted a stone and said to Mujaahid, 'Hold my feet.' And then he walked down a dreadful and grim abyss or pit, where Haroot and Maroot were hanging as upside down mountains. Upon seeing them Mujaahid said, 'All glory be to Allaah' when suddenly (the apparent mounts of Haroot and Maroot) began to tremble and shake as if they were going to collide with each other. He and the jew fainted, when the jew regained consciousness he said, 'You almost destroyed yourself and me.'"
His Death:

Most of the scholars said that Mujaahid died in 103H or 104H. Waaqidee mentions from Ibn Juraij that he lived a total of 83 years. He died whilst in a state of prostration.

Imam As-Sa'di: Commentary on the verse {indeed all the believers are brothers…..}

Imam As-Sa'di: Commentary on the verse {indeed all the believers are brothers…..} [AlHujurat: 10]

Allah the Most High says:
إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَ أَخَوَيْكُمْ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

indeed all the believers are brothers. So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allâh, that you may receive mercy. (Al-Hujurat 49:10)

Imaam A-Sa'di said:

"This is a bond that Allah has concluded between the believers, that if there is an individual whoever he may be, whether in the east of earth or its west, that has belief in Allah and his Angels and his Books and his Messengers and the Last Day then indeed he is a brother of the believers, a brotherhood that necessitates that the believers love for him what they love for themselves and that they dislike for him what they dislike for themselves, and due to this the Prophet (Salaa Allaahu Alaihi Wa Salam) said ordering the believers with brotherhood based on Eeman:

[و لا تحَاسَدُوا و لا تَنَاجَشُوا و لا تَبَاغَضُوا و لا تَدَابَرُوا و كُونُوا عِبَاد الله إِخْوَانَاً و , المُسلِم أَخُو المُسْلِم لايَظلِمُهُ و لا يَخذِلُهُ و لا يَكذِبُهُ)) [متفق عليه))

"Do not envy each other. Do not inflate prices on one another. Do not hate one another. Do not abandon one another, but rather be servants of Allah and brothers. The Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim. He does not oppress him, nor does he abandon him nor does he lie to him." [Agreed Upon]

"The believer to the believer is like a building whose different parts support each other" Then the Prophet clasped his hands with fingers interlaced. [Agreed Upon]

Indeed Allah and his Messenger have ordered the believers with the fulfilment of each other's rights. And Allah and his Messenger have ordered with that which brings about unity and mutual love and interconnection between them (the believers), and all of this is in support of the rights they have on each other.
So if fighting was to take place between them that results in the hearts disuniting and mutual enmity of the hearts and abandonment, then the believers should rectify between their brothers and race towards that which will eradicate their enmity.
Allah then orders with At-Taqwah (fear), and from At-Taqwah and fulfilment of the rights of the believers comes Ar-Rahmah (mercy)."

The Seven Gates of Hell

The Seven Gates of Hell

Allaah says:

"Indeed the hell fire is the dwelling place of them all. It has seven gates and within each gate there is an
appropriate punishment for each inhabitant…"  (Hijr: 44)

Imam As Sa'di (Rahimahullah) mentions in his tafseer: "The gates of Hell are structured one gate below the
other descending, opposite the gates of paradise, which have one gate above the other ascending. The
distance between each gate is 500 years prepared for Iblees and all of his followers.
The First Gate: This gate is called Jahannam, as Allah mentions in many verses in the Qur'an:
قالوا لا تنفروا في الحر قل نار جهنم أشد حرا لو كانوا يفقهون
"They said (i.e. the hypocrites): "Don't go out for war during the heat!" Say (i.e. Muhammad) the fire of
Jahannam is even hotter if you only understood."  (Tawbah: 81)

This gate is called Jahannam because the fire will scorch the faces of the men and women who enter it!!!
Their faces will be sullen and glum. It will eat away at their flesh and Allah says:

كلما نضجت جلودهم بدلنناهم جلودا غيرها ليذوقوا العذاب

"Every time the fire eats away their flesh We will replace it with new flesh so they can taste the
punishment…" (Nisaa':56)

Imam As Sa'di (Rahimahullah) mentioned in his tafseer: this is in response to their obstinacy and resistance
in the life of this world.  Just as they continued to reject obedience to Allah and submission to Him, likewise
the fire will continue to burn up their flesh and when it reaches the point of almost being obliterated, Allah
will remove the old flesh and replace it with new flesh, a just recompense for their rebellion in this life."

The ironic thing is, this is the lightest punishment that one can receive in Hell outside of the specific
punishment of Abu Talib the uncle of the Prophet (Sallahu alaihi wa salam)

The Second Gate: This Gate is called Ladha', as Allah says in the Qur'an:

كلا إنها لظى نزاعة للشوى تدعوا من أدبر وتولى وجمع فأوعى...

"There is no way out for them, except the Ladha (i.e. Fierce Blaze) will certainly scorch the inward organs
and the outward flesh! It will invite everyone who turned away from following the truth,  heedless of it
and gathered wealth but refused to spend it in the cause of Allah…"  (Ma'arij:15)

This level of hell is called Ladha because the fire will eat away at their body parts one by one, both
internally and externally. It will invite those who abandoned Tawheed (i.e. Islamic monotheism) and turned
away from that which the Prophet (Sallahu alaihi wa salam) came with.

The Third Gate: This gate is called Saqar, as Allah says:

سأصليه سقر وما أدراك ما سقر ولا تبقي واتذر لواحة للبشر عليها تسعة عشر...
"We will throw him into the Saqar and what will make you know what Saqar is? It is a scorching fire, it
spares nothing and leaves nothing behind it will shake them vehemently and over it are nineteen angels "
(Mudathir: 26-30)

It is called Saqar because it will eat up the flesh of the human being and not his bones. But listen to what
Allah mentioned about those who enter this particular level of hell:

في جنات يتسائلون عن المجرمين ما سلككم في سقر قالوا لم نك من المصلين ولم نك نطعم المسكين وكنا نخوض مع الخائضين
وكنا نكذب بيوم الدين حتى أتانا اليقين.
"Those in paradise will ask the criminals what has landed you all in Saqar? They will say: "We were not of
those who used to pray and we didn't feed the poor and we used to talk vainly with those who talked vain
talk and we used to deny the Day of Recompense until death came to us and we saw the reality of all that
we denied" (Mudathir:40-47)

So there are a total of four things that they were guilty of, which ultimately landed them in this level of the
hell fire:

The First: They did not offer salat (i.e. prayer) and the scholars also use this as a proof to show that
abandoning the salat is Kufr (i.e. disbelief). And it also shows how serious it is because it was the first thing
they mentioned out of all the offenses they were guilty of. In essence they refused to give Allah His right.
The Second: They did not feed the poor. Meaning they refused to benefit the needy on all levels.

The Third: They used to talk vainly with those who talk in vain. Meaning they used to indulge in falsehood
and used it to argue unjustly against the truth.

The Fourth: They used to deny and reject the Day of Recompense and this is the end result of delving into
falsehood.

The Fourth Gate: This gate is called Al Hutamah, as Allah says:

كلا لينبذن في الحطمة وماأدراك مالحطمة نار الله الموقدة التي تطلع على الأفئدة إنها عليهم مؤصد فعمد ممددة
"Nay they will be thrown into Al Hutamah (i.e. Crushing Fire). And what will make you know what Al
Hutamah is? The fire of Allah kindled by men and stones which scorches the hearts. Surely it is vaulted over
them in pillars widely extended." (Humazah: 4-9)

It is called Al Hutamah because it will shatter the bones of the human being and burn the heart and other
internal organs. The fire will start at his feet and burn all the way through until it reaches the heart!!! Allah
says:

"Indeed it (i.e. the hell fire) spits out sparks the size of mansions, as if they were yellow herds" (Mursalat: 32-
33)

The individual in the fire will turn completely black when the sparks ascend up and scorch their faces, hands
and bodies. They will cry tears until their tear ducts are completely exhausted then they will cry blood and
when the blood is completely exhausted they will cry pus until the pus is completely exhausted!!!! They will
leave behind a pool so great that if a ship wanted to set sail on top of what they cried it would have no
problem doing so!!!

The Fifth Gate: This particular gate is called Jaheem, as Allah mentions in many verses:

خذوه فغلواثم الجحيم صلوا ثم في سلسلة ذرعها سبعون ذراعا فاسلكوه إنه كان لا يؤمن بالله العظيم ولا يحض على طعام
المسكين...
"Seize him and shackle him!! Then roast him in Jaheem (i.e. hell fire) in chains that are seventy cubits long.
This is because he did not believe in Allah, the Magnificent and he did not encourage the feeding of the
poor."  (Al Haqq: 30-34)

This gate is called Jaheem because it is actually one big piece of hot coal that is bigger than the lowest
heaven as we know it. And look at the crimes of the one who enters this particular gate:

The First: He did not have the correct belief in Allah. This is to correct the misunderstanding of those who
deride having the correct aqeedah and make discouraging statements such as "Why do they spend so much
time studying Aqeedah?!!" or "We can learn Tawheed in 10 minutes!"  or those who simply say: "I just believe
in Allah!"  This is a very nonchalant approach towards the greatest right over us as human beings, which is
the right of Allah (i.e. Tawheed) the right to be worshiped alone without any partners.

The Second: They refused to give the creation their rights, which is the most important right after the right
of Allah. He did not encourage the feeding of the poor.

The Sixth Gate: This gate is called Sa'eer, as Allah says:

فريق في الجنة وفريق في السعير
"A group in paradise and a group in Sa'eer (i.e. the blazing fire)" (Shurah: 7)

Allah also says about the people therein:

و قالوا لو كنا نسمع أو نعقل ما كنا في أصحاب السعير فاعترفوا بذنبهم فسحقا لأصحاب السعير
"And they will say: "If we had listened and used our intellect we would not be inhabitants of As Sa'eer (i.e.
blazing fire)!! They confessed their sins but away with the companions of As Sa'eer" (Mulk: 10-11)

This gate of Hell is called As Sa'eer because it is constantly kindling, rather it has never ceased to kindle from
the moment it was created!! In it are 300 castles and in each castle there are 300 houses and in each house
there are 300 types of punishments.

In this particular level of hell there are scorpions and snakes, ropes, chains and shackles!! There is also
something call the "Pit of Agony", which is incomparable and unparalleled to any other type of punishment
in hell. When the door of this pit is opened the people in the hell fire will grieve austerely!!!

The Seventh Gate: This gate is called Al Haawiyah, as Allah says:

وأما من خفت موازينه فأمه هاوية وما أدراك ما هيه نار حامية
"As for the one whose scales are light, then the Hawiyah will embrace him like a mother embraces her child.
And what will make you know what Al Hawiyah is? It is a kindled fir burning hot." (Al Qa'riah: 8-11)

This gate of hell is called Al Hawiyah because whoever enters this level of the hell fire will never come out!!!
Notice Allah said that the fire will embrace him like a mother embraces her child!! In this level of the hell
fire there is a well that will let out a breeze of fire and when this breeze comes out it will be so hot and
powerful that all of the fires in the other levels of hell will seek refuge in Allah from it!!!

In this level of the hell fire there is a mountain made of fire and the enemies of Allah will be laid on their
faces on this mountain and their hands will be tied to their necks and their necks tied to their feet and over
them will stand the Zabaaniyah, who are angels that guard this particular level of the hell fire, as Allah
says:

"And We will call the Zabaaniyah (i.e. angels who guard the hell fire)…"  (Alaq: 18)

The hands of the Zabaaniyah will be like iron and when they strike one of those in the hell fire one time
with their hands they let out a scream so loud that both the Jinn and mankind can hear.
