Becoming preoccupied with the flaws of others

Becoming preoccupied with the flaws of others

Al-Imām ibn al-Qayyim, [may Allāh have mercy on him], said:

“Blessed is the one whose own shortcomings keep him occupied, preventing him from focusing on the faults of others. Woe to the one who neglects their own flaws and becomes preoccupied with the flaws of others.

The former is a mark of true happiness, while the latter signifies wretchedness!”

Tareeq al-Hijratayn, 1/172 | Al-Imām ibn al-Qayyim [may Allāh have mercy on him]

EVEN IF HE BE IN THE DEPHTS OF HIS HOME

EVEN IF HE BE IN THE DEPHTS

OF HIS HOME

O dear Muslim! If you are in the habit of spreading your brother's faults among the people, then Allah will certainly expose your own faults and make them known among the people, as the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said in a hadith:

"Whosoever pursues the faults of his brother, Allah will pursue his faults and whosoever pursues his brothers faults Allah will expose his faults even if he be in the dephts of his home."

The most diseased form of Gheeba

Backbiting other in order to make people not follow that person in the hope people will follow you instead

The most diseased form of Gheeba
Ibn Jawzi رحمه الله  said, “The most diseased form of backbiting is when people induce others to stay away from some people, while having others look towards them.

They combine the acts of dispraising the one in mention and earning praise for themselves. Due to their ignorance they are oblivious to fact that they are falling into two sins: backbiting and showing-off.

For example a person is mentioned within their circle and they say: “Praise to Allah we have no concern to visit the Sultan and strive for the vanities of this world,” or they say about him, “We seek refuge in Allah from deficient modesty, We ask Allah to save us from being immodest.”

Though these kinds of words they instruct people to see the shortcomings of someone else (while trying to establish they are free from that shortcoming so people should follow them and not the person they backbit).”

"From the people are those whose jealousy carries them to backbiting, so he combines two ugly [things]: backbiting and jealousy".

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

Some people have a nature similar to the one of pigs, which doesn´t appreciate good food and rushes towards faeces if a man relieves himself. Many people are like this. If they hear about or see with their own eyes your good qualities, even if these exceed your flaws by far, it doesn´t please them, they don´t pay attention to it nor do they mention it to other people. But if they see the least mistake in talk or action, they react immediately and wholeheartedly.

A believer covers up and advises

       المؤمن يستر وينصح..

Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali writes:

وقال الفضيل بن عياض موضحًا الفرق بين الناصح والشامت: المؤمن يستر وينصح والفاجر يهتك ويعير

“When Al-Fudhayl Ibn Iyaadh was asked about the difference between advising and exposing, he said: “A believer covers up and advises [his or her fellow believers], whereas an evildoer exposes and humiliates [others].”

Word of advice..becareful!

Word of advice..becareful!

Imaam Ash-Shâfi‘î (rahimahullâh) said,

“Whoever spread gossip for you spreads gossip against you. Whoever relates tales to you will tell tales about you. Whoever when you please him says about you what is not in you, when you anger him will say about you what is not in you.”

Punishment of Backbiters

Punishment of Backbiters

Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “When my Lord ascended me to the heavens, I passed by a group of people having nails made of cooper with which they scratch their faces and chest. I asked: Who are those, O Jibril? He answered: Those are who consume the flesh of people [i.e. backbiters] and vilify the honour of others.”

The Difference between Caution and Suspicion

The Difference between Caution and Suspicion

One who is cautious resembles one who travels with his wealth and riding animal while being mindful of thieves. He resembles one who has prepared himself with armor and weapons to meet his enemy.

As for suspicion, it is a heart filled with bad thoughts of others, and backbiting, slander, and hatred is the result. One who is cautious intermingles with people while protecting himself, though one who is suspicious harms them while avoiding them. The former advises them while the latter despises them.

Poisonous Tongues

Poisonous Tongues

Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim, rahimahullaah, said:

It is quite amazing how it can be easy upon a person to be cautious and wary with regards to [different impermissible acts such as]: eating from unlawful means, oppression, adultery and fornication, stealing, drinking intoxicants, looking at prohibited things and the likes, and yet quite difficult for him to be careful about the movement of his tongue. So bad that you find a person towards whom the people point to concerning his practice of the Religion, his asceticism, and worship, and despite this he says statements that anger Allaah greatly and he shows no concern about this, yet this statement will take him [to a Fire] that is farther than distance between east and west. (1)

How many people do you see from amongst those who have enough piety to abstain from lewd, indecent acts, oppression and wrong doing, but their tongues rip apart the honor of both the dead and the living and they show not a care in the least.

Those Who Speak ill Of The Sahaabah..

Those Who Speak ill Of The Sahaabah...

All the Companions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم were `Adool (just) and Sudooq (truthful). We do not revile anyone of them, nor do we mention them except in goodness.

Whatever took place between `Alee and Mu`aawiyah, then we remain silent about this. They will get twice the reward for their correct judgments and decisions, and they will still be rewarded for their incorrect judgments. As the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “If a judge gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is correct (i.e. agrees with Allaah and His Apostle's verdict) he will receive a double reward, and if he gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is wrong, (i.e. against that of Allaah and His Apostle) even then he will get a reward.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]

Those who speak ill of the Sahaabah, speak ill about Allaah and His Messenger. For verily, Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم were pleased with them; but these evildoers are not.

Haafidh `Abul Qaasim ibn `Asaakir has documented in Tareekh Dimashq that Imaam al-Nasaa’i was asked about Mu`aawiyah Ibn Abi Sufyaan رضي الله عنه. His reply was:

“Islaam is like a house with a door. The door of Islaam is the Sahaabah. Whoever speaks ill of the Sahaabah seeks but to harm Islaam, just like one who knocks a door to enter a house. As for Mu`aawiyah, whoever speaks ill of him seeks to find a way to speak ill of the Sahaabah.” [Tahdheeb al-Kamaal, vol. 1 p. 338-339]

If backbiting of the layman ranks

amongst the major sins...

The Shaykh (rahima-hullaah) mentions:

((If backbiting of the layman ranks amongst the major sins, then backbiting of the scholar is much greater. This is because the effects of backbiting of the scholar does not rest at him only, rather it rests upon him and that which he possesses in knowledge of the Sharee'ah.))

Do You Have These Two Traits?

Do You Have These Two Traits?

Abdullah ibn Amr (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked, “Which people are the best? “ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said,” The best people are those whose tongues are truthful and their hearts are” Makhmun” .They said, “We know the meaning of a truthful tongue, but what is a heart that is Makhmun?” He said, “It’s a heart that is pious and pure with no sin. This heart has no unfairness, no envy and doesn’t hold malice.”

Collected by Ibn Majah (4216) Al-Albani graded this hadeeth as being Saheeh

Benefits for this topic:

Shaykh Muhammad Al-Imam (may Allah preserve him) spoke about this hadeeth in his general advice to the youth who involve themselves in fault finding, criticizing and belittling their brothers’ efforts. He said,

"This hadeeth puts in plain words the person who holds the highest moral excellence among the Muslims. Any person’s heart, which is free from harboring hatred and envy towards his brother, has achieved an enormous amount of good and he is considered amongst the best people.

Therefore, based on this hadeeth we need to investigate what’s in our hearts. Reason being, Shaytaan sows seeds of discord. Furthermore Fitan doesn’t leave anyone alone. For example, a person is a caller to Allah and there might occur between two brothers an argument or a dispute or a difference of opinion. Then after this occurs he neglects what’s in his chest. Following this negligence some disdain or distaste enters his heart. Afterwards, these emotions come in his heart. The person must be rid of such feelings.

As you are all aware, the human being is constantly trialed with falling into these types of issues of Fitan. Therefore each and every one of us, are in dire need to safe guard our hearts. We need to protect that organ so that it remains full with Allah’s remembrance, fear of Him, aware of His supervision over us, etc. And likewise our hearts need to constantly hold the love of brotherhood. The love of brotherhood must contain love, respect, and loving good for your fellow Muslim, giving him advice and working with him in righteousness and piety. All of these actions are from Islamic legislation.

It’s required that we all examine our hearts. We are human beings and things can enter our chest. We need to protect our hearts against such emotions, especially when issues arise and Shaytaan wants to sow discord."

Quotes from the Salaf:

Abdullah ibn ‘Awn Al-Basri said, “There are three things I love for myself and my brother to have. I love learning this Quran and acting by it. I love this Sunnah and striving to implement it and I love for myself and my brothers to invite people to piety."

“Remembering Allah is a cure and constantly mentioning people is a sickness”
