Abdullaah bin Mas’ood

Abdullaah bin Mas’ood

He was the great Companion of the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم), Abdullaah bin Mas’ood bin Ghafil bin Habeeb (رضي الله عنه‏), died in 32 A.H. in Madina and Zubair led the funeral prayer and was buried in Baqi’.

He was the sixth person to embrace Islaam even before Umar bin Khattab – Radi Allaahuanhu. The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) testified to his place in Paradise‘Alee (صلى الله عليه وسلم) mentions that the Messenger of Allaah ordered Ibn Mas’ood to climb up a tree to bring something down from it, and his companions looked at the shins of Abdullaah bin Mas’ood while he was climbing the tree, and they began to laugh at the thinness of his shins! So the Messenger of Allaah said: ‘What causes you to laugh?! The leg of Abdullaah is heavier in the scales on the Day of Judgement than mount Uhud.’

[Recorded by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad and authenticated by Shaykh Ahmad Shakir(920)]

Abdullaah bin Mas’ood was of the great recitors of the Qur’aan, it was said that he was one of the closest in guidance to the Messenger of Allaah

Giving precedence to others over yourself...

Shaykh Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said,

“Giving precedence to others over yourself in those things which are obligatory is not allowed. For example, if a person only has enough water for himself with which to perform ablution and there is another person with him who needs water, he is not to give the water to the other person, the other person should do tayammum. Because this is giving precedence to others over yourself in those things which are obligatory, and giving such precedence to others over yourself is haraam.’

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti’, vol. 15, p. 40.

Ibn Taymiyyah beat him so badly the people were sure he was going to die!

Ibn Taymiyyah beat him so badly the people were sure he was going to die!

(While Curing a Possessed Person by Allaah’s Permission)

In his discussion of the practice of beating a possessed person to cure jinn possession, Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have Mercy on him) relates the following:

…He (Ibn Taymiyyah) used to often read into the ear of a possessed person: “Have you then assumed that We have only created you for mere play and that you would not return to Us?” (23:115)

He told me once that he read it into the ear of a possessed person, and the (female) spirit replied, “Yes,” prolonging its pronounciation.

He said: So I took a stick and beat him with it around the base of his neck until my hands weakened from the beating. Those gathered had no doubt he was going to die from that beating.

As the beating went on, she (the jinn) said, “I love him.”

So I said to her, “He does not love you!”

She said, “I want to make Hajj with him.”

So I said to her, “He does not want to make Hajj with you!”

She said, “Then I will leave him in honor of you.”

I said, “No! Rather, (leave him) as an act of obedience to Allaah and His Messenger!”

She said, “OK, I will leave him.”

Then the (possessed) person sat, looking left and right. He said, “What has brought me here in the presence of the shaykh?”

The people asked, “And (have you no recollection of) the whole beating?”

The man replied, “And what would the shaykh beat me for, when I have done nothing wrong?” He had felt nothing whatsoever of the beating!

From the Beauty of Knowledge

From the Beauty of Knowledge

It is reported that Imām Ahmad b. Hanbal – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

Al-Shâfi’î saw me sitting in his circle, and there was some ink on my shirt I was trying to hide. He said, “Young man, why are you hiding it? Having ink on ones clothes is a sign of lofty conduct: to the sight it is black, but to the insight it is white (with the light of knowledge).”

It is reported that ‘Abdullâh b. Al-Mubârak – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

Ink on the clothes is the perfume of the scholars.

- Some put this in verse (from Arabic):

The ink-pot’s ink is the perfume of men
As saffron is the perfume of women
So the former befits the garments of those men
As the latter the garments of wives

It is reported that Imâm Ahmad said, seeing the students of hadîth approaching with their ink-pots:

It is only the storyteller-preachers (al-qusās) who have killed knowledge. A man listens to a storyteller for a year without really learning anything that will last, whereas a man who sits with a scholar for an hour learns what will last and benefit him before he even gets up.

The Problems That Persist In The Hearts Of The Youth

The Problems That Persist In The Hearts Of The Youth

Thoughts and whispers that contradict the religion do not frequent in the dead heart, on account of its lifeless and a destroyed organ, Shyataan does not want more than what he is charged with. For that reason, it was said to Ibn Mas'ud radiyallahu anhu or Ibn Abbas radiyallahu anhu that the Jew says "They do not get any whispers while they pray". In other words uneasiness does not afflict them. He Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam said: " They have spoken the truth and what can Shaytaan do with a heart that is already ruined."
However, as for the hearts that is alive, which contains a portion of faith Shaytaan attacks it. There is not any leniency or pause in his assault. Shaytaan casts misgivings contradicting his religion. If the servant submits to these misgivings and doubt they serve as the most severe means of destruction. Eventually, he casts doubts on this youth about his lord, religion, and belief. Whenever Shaytaan finds weakness and frustration in the heart, he occupies it until he separates this adolescent from his religion. On the contrary whenever Shaytaan finds a heart that is strong and steadfast he succumbs to defeat. His scheme is feeble and as a result he is made miserable.

The whispers that Shaytaan hurls into the heart do not affect the person if he uses the cure mentioned by the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam...

"Ibn Abbas Radiyallahu anhu narrated that a person came to the Prophet Sallallahu alahyi wa Salam and said:"i have a certain feeling within myself which being a burning ember is more desirable to me than my uttering it. "The Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam said: "All praise is due to Allah who has rejected his scheme i.e driven away Shaytaan's evil thoughts. (Collected by Abu Dawood in his Sunnan #5122)

Some people from the Companions came and said, "O Messenger of Allah Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam we find within ourselves (such a feeling) which overwhelms each one of us from speaking about it i.e he feels it imposing to speak about it."The Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam asked: "do you also experience it? the Companions replied, "Yes The Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam replied "that is true faith (Imaan)". (Collected in Muslim in his Sahih #132)

The meaning of having true faith is that evil thoughts that you face, and your rejection of them does not harm your faith a single bit. in fact, rejecting these thoughts is a proof that your faith is sincere and has not been affected by any loss.

The Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam said: "Shaytaan comes to one of you and says, Who has created this? Who has created that? Until he says: Who has created your lord? When he reaches this limit, then seek refuge in Allah and in His Compassion." (Collected By At-Tabaraanee in his Mu'Jamul Saghir #1090)

And in a similar Hadeeth in Abu Dawood (#4722) with a Hasan Isnad that the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam said:

"So! Say Allah is One, Allah is Independent, He does not give birth nor was He given birth to, then spit towards the left three times and seek refuge from the accursed Shaytaan."

in these Ahadeeth that companions described illness to the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam He Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam in turn prescribed four things for them as a remedy.

* Abstain from these temptations. This means to completely turn away from it then act as though it never existed. then occupy yourself with the remembrance of Allah.

* Seek refuge in Allah from the whispers of the accursed Shaytaan.

* Say I believe in Allah and His Messenger Sallallahu alayhi wa Salam.* Recite Surah Al-Ikhlaas. Then spit to your left side three times and say i seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytaan.

Story of a man who succumbed to Temptation

Story of a man who succumbed to Temptation

Inspirational Read !!

It is related that a group of people were once seated in the company of Al-Hasan Al-Basri, when some men passed by, dragging along with them a body of a dead man. When Al-Hasan saw the dead man, a glint of instant recognition could be discerned in his eyes, and he fell unconscious from the shock of some memory that had just been rekindled.
When he regained consciousness, his companions asked him what was wrong with him.

He said: This man – referring to the dead man being dragged along on the ground – used to be one of the best worshipers and one of the most renowned ascetics (in the world) (renouncing all the temporary pleasures of this world because he was so busy and devoted to worship).

One day he left his home, intending to go to the Masjid to pray, but on the way, he saw a beautiful young Christian women, who became an immediate temptation to him.

When he proposed to her, she refused, saying; “I will not marry you until you become an adherent of my religion.”

He went on his way, but as time went on, he yearned for her continued to increase. He then succumbed to her wish and exited from the fold of (Islaam) the religion of pure, unadulterated Monotheism.

After he became a Christian and some time passed, the woman came out to him from behind the curtain and said, “You are a man who is bereft of goodness. You have forsaken your religion, which was important to you for your entire life, simply for the sake of a lust that is of no value. Indeed, I too am forsaking my religion, but not for the same reason. I am doing so in order to achieve a blissful existence that never comes to an end, an eternal existence under the care of the One, the As-Samad (i.e., Allaah; The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creature need, He neither eats nor drinks).” She then recited the entire Chapter of Al-Ikhlaas:

“Say (O Muhammad (saw): “He is Allaah, (the) One. Allaah-us-Samad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks). He begets not, nor was He begotten; And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.” [Qur'aan:112:1-4]

When the people had heard about what she had said, they approached her and asked, “All along, you had this Chapter memorized?“

“No,” she answered. “By Allaah, I had never known it before. But after this man continued to insist upon having me, I saw a dream; I saw Hellfire, and my place in it was shown to me. I became terrified and panic-stricken. Maalik – the custodian of the Hellfire – said to me: ‘Do not be afraid or sad, for Allaah has ransomed (i.e., saved) you with this man (i.e., he will take the place in Hellfire that you would have taken had not Allaah saved you).’ He then took me by the hand and admitted me into Paradise. Seeing a line written inside of it, I read it; among what was written were these Words:
“Allaah blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills). And with Him is the Mother of the Book (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfooz).” {Qur’aan 13:39]}

He then recited the Al-Ikhlas Chapter to me, and I began to repeat it. Then I woke up and had it (the Al-Ikhlas Chapter) memorized.”

Al-Hasan then said, “The woman then embraced Islaam, and the man whose corpse you just saw being dragged away was killed for having apostatized. And I ask Allaah to make us firm and steadfast upon guidance and to grant us safety and success.”¹

Revenge...

Shaikh Shuraim (Imaam of al-Haram) said in the Khutbah (23 Rabi` al-Thaanee 1433H):

A gentle heart is the one which forgives (the mistakes), overlooks (the faults), and does not seek revenge for personal causes.

Allaah تعالى mentions that one of the attributes of a Believer is:
{and when they are angry, they forgive} [Surah al-Shooraa (42): 37]
Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: “Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم never beat anyone with his hand neither a woman nor a servant, but only in the case when he had been fighting in the cause of Allaah and he never took revenge for anything unless the things made inviolable by Allaah were made violable; he then took revenge for Allaah تبارك وتعالى.” [Saheeh Muslim (5756)]
--end of quote.
Imaam Ibn Katheer رحمه الله commented about the verse:
{and when they are angry, they forgive}: means, their nature dictates that they should forgive people and be tolerant. Vengeance is not in their nature. It was reported in the Saheeh that the Messenger of Allaah never took revenge for his own sake, only when the sacred Laws of Allaah were violated.
And Ibn Abee Haatim reported from his father who reported from Ibn Abu `Umar, who reported from Sufyaan, from Zaaidah, from Mansoor on the authority of Ibraheem that he said: “The Believers disliked humiliating (others); and when they had the upper hand, they would forgive.”
--end of quote.
Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: “Whenever Allaah’s Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم was given the choice of one of two matters, he would choose the easier of the two, as long as it was not sinful to do so, but if it was sinful to do so, he would not approach it. Allaah’s Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم never took revenge (over anybody) for his own sake but (he did) only when Allaah’s legal bindings were outraged in which case he would take revenge for Allaah’s sake.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3318, 5731, 6421) and Saheeh Muslim (5752)]

He Lost The Woman, and He Lost His Religion

He Lost The Woman, and He Lost His Religion

Ibn al-Qayyim (Rahimahullah) narrated:

It is reported that in Egypt, there was a man who would maintain the mosques, making the call to prayer, etc. He was, by all outward means, an obedient person and devout worshipper.

One day, as he usually would, he ascended the minaret to make the call to prayer. At the base of the minaret, there was a Christian woman standing. He saw her, and was seduced by her looks. So, he descended the minaret, went to her, and entered her home.

She said to him: “Who are you, and what do you want?”

He replied: “I want you.”
She said: “Why?”
He said: “You have enslaved my eyes, and you have captured my heart.”
She said: “I will never answer your desire in a doubtful or suspicious manner.”
He said: “Ok, so, I will marry you, then.”
She said: “You are a Muslim, and I am a Christian. My father will never allow me to marry you.”
He said: “So, I will become a Christian.”
She said: “If you wish to do so, go ahead.“

So, the man became a Christian in order to marry this woman, and lived with the woman’s family in her house. Later on that day, however, he was on the roof of the house. He fell from the roof and died without even having enjoyed his new bride. So, he lost the woman, and he lost his religion.”

Checking from where the Sun Rises

Checking from where the Sun Rises

It is reported that Al-Dahhāk said:

How surprising it is that the companions of ‘Abdulāh (ibn Mas’ūd) are looking now to see where the sun rises from. Do they not know that when Fajr comes from a direction, the sun rises from the same?

It is reported that Jundub b. ‘Abdillāh Al-Bajalī said:

I once sought permission to see Hudhayfah three times without being given permission. So I left, but his messenger caught up with me. [When I spoke to Hudhayfah] he asked, “What made you leave?” I replied, “I thought you were sleeping (after Fajr).” He said, “I do not sleep until I see where the sun rises from.” [The narrator] said, “I related this to Muhammad (another narrator), to which he said, ‘More than one of the Companions of Muhammad – Allāh’s praise and peace be upon him – did this.’”

The Superiority of Remembering Allah after Fajr until Sunrise

Anas ibn Malik (radi Allahu Anhu) said, The Prophet (sallahu Alayhi wa salim) said,
" Whoever prays Fajr in congregation ,after that sits and remembers Allah until the sunrises, following this he prays two rakah earns the reward of Hajj or Umrah."
Collected by At-Tirmithi (579) Imam At-Tirmithi and Al-Albani (May Allah mercy on them both) graded this hadeeth as Hasan. 586
Benefits for this subject:
  • Imam At-Tirmithi titled a section in his Jami called, "The Recommendation to sit the Masjid after Fajr until sunrise."
  • Out of the six books of Hadeeth on Imam At-Tirmithi narrated this hadeeth
  • The two Rakah here are referred to as Salatul Duha or Ishraq.
** An Issue specific for women **

Is the woman included for this reward if she prays in her house?

Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Baz(may Allah have mercy on him) said," If a woman prays in her Musalla then after Fajr remembers Allah by Thikr or reading the Quran until sunup then offers two Rakah she gets reward mentioned in the hadeeth. (Majmu Fatawa vol 11)

Shaykh Muqbil (may Allah rest him in Jannah) said, "Yes she is. If a woman prays fajr in her house and sits and remembers Allah until sunrise." [Verdicts for the Muslim Woman page 121. 1st edition printed by Maktabah San'a Al-Athareeyah 2007]

Hypocrisy Today

Hudhayfah b. Al-Yamān – Allāh be pleased with him – said:

Question: Our people in Palestine are today in an ongoing battle with the jews. Is it allowed according to the Sharî’ah to kill a jew if one of us were to catch one?

Shaykh al-Albânî: If what is allowed?

Questioner: To kill him.

Shaykh al-Albânî: If it is allowed to kill a jew? Where? here or there?

Questioner: There.

al-Albânî: Dear brother! Do you not see that several Muslims die if one jew gets killed? Do you not see this? Who has the most victims? The Muslims or the jews?

Questioner: The Muslims, but one has to act in this way in order to throw fear into their hearts.

al-Albânî: No, one doesn’t have to do it like that at all.

Questioner: For how long will this continue?

al-Albânî: One doesn’t have to do it like that. Imagine if it continues in this way, what will be the results? The Muslims look while the Palestinians are getting slaughtered. How will the results be? If one jew gets killed, ten Palestinians get killed and thousands get imprisoned. What will be the results? Is this the way the jews are defeated? This is not the way it is done.

The fact of the matter is that the Muslims of today have taken the wrong way to Jihâd. Jihâd is initiated with the struggle against one’s own soul. The prophet (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“A Mujâhid is he who struggles against his soul for the sake of Allâh.”

I am not mentioning the famous Hadîth:

“We have returned from a lesser Jihâd to a greater Jihâd.”

This Hadîth is weak and it is replaced by the authentic Hadîth:

“A Mujâhid is he who struggles against his soul for the sake of Allâh.”

Question: How do you advise the one who forbids Shaykh Rabî’ bin Hâdî’s cassette tapes and claims that they erupt problems and chaos, that they contain praise of the rulers in Saudi Arabia and that his, that is, Shaykh Rabî’s, praise of the rulers is hypocrisy?

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymîn: We deem this to be an error and a serious mistake. Shaykh Rabî’ is one of the scholars of the Sunnah.

He is one of the people of goodness. His ‘Aqîdah (creed) is sound and his manhaj (methodology) is straight. However, when he started to speak against some individuals of later time whom some of the people deem to be role models, they defamed him with these defects. Do you understand?

Question: What is the ruling on the ruler who rules by something other than that which Allâh has revealed while he at the same time considers it to be obligatory to rule by that which Allâh has revealed?
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymîn: It is not an easy matter. It is not possible to give a general ruling. If one were to give a general ruling, then some people will misunderstand it. If the ruler does something, which according to this person opposes the book of Allâh, then he will say that he (the ruler) is a disbeliever. This is exactly what some of the groups of today do when they make Takfîr [exclude someone from the religion] upon the rulers because they say that they have not ruled by that which Allâh has revealed. However, they have not studied the matter.
That is why I deem it better to shut the door to this issue. It is better to shut the door to this issue so that people don’t misunderstand the scholar who issues the Fatwâ and take advantage of it in order to revolt against the rulers of their countries. As you yourself know, this matter is a great matter.
The scholars (rahimahullâh) have spoken about this matter in relation to the relevant verses in chapter al-Mâ’idah. You can always refer to the words of the scholars in this matter.

Question: Who is the one who decides that the sins in the society are to be openly condemned? Is it the scholars or the callers?

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymîn: As for the decision, it concerns the condemnation of the rulers and not the widespread sins in the society. We have for example widespread sins such as usury and gambling (games of chance, al-Maysir). Most of the insurances that exist today are games of chance. What is strange is that most of the people have accepted them. There is hardly anyone who condemns them even though Allâh mentions them together with Khamr (intoxicants), Al-Ansâb and al-Azlâm (arrows for seeking luck or decision). Even so, there is nobody who is condemning them. You assure your car and your house and give away money [to insurance companies] without knowing if your loss increases or decreases. This exactly is gambling. As for the widespread sins, you should condemn them.

However, we are talking about condemning the ruler. An example of it is a person who stands up and speaks in the mosque about how unjust the country is and how it does this and that. We are thusly speaking about this and that he is speaking about the rulers.

Additionally, there is a difference between speaking about a ruler or leader in his presence and his absence. All condemnations that have been reported from the Salaf occurred in the presence of the leader or ruler. There is a difference if the leader or ruler is present or absent. He could always defend himself and explain his reasoning if he is present. It may be that he is right and we are wrong. What is dangerous is to speak freely in his absence. That which has been reported from the Salaf has always been in the presence of the leader or ruler.

It is generally known that it would have been backbiting if one were to speak ill of an average individual in his absence.

Tricked by Sins

Ibn Qayyim:

"There are those who do not see the effects of a sin, and they are tricked by it. They don't realise that the sin can take effect after a while."

Ibn al Jawzi: Free Time and Good Health

Free Time and Good Health
Ibn Al-Jawzi رحمه الله said:

“It happens that a person has good health, but does not have free time because of his being engaged in earning his livelihood; or he is rich but has no good health. So, if these two (good health and free time) are gathered in a person, but laziness overtakes him from fulfilling his duties, then he is a loser. (Know that) this world is the harvest field of the hereafter; and in it there is business, the profit of which will be visible in the hereafter. So, whoever utilizes his free time and good health in the obedience of Allaah, he is the blessed one. And he who utilizes them in the disobedience of Allaah, he is the one who is unjust to himself, because the leisure time is affected by busyness and health is affected by sickness.”

Etiquettes in the Congregations of the people

Etiquettes in the Congregations
of the people

When you sit with the people and congregate with them, make humility the sign by which you are recognized and let Fear of Allaah be your cover (i.e. protection from sins) and giving advice to the servants of Allaah as your abiding way.

Be eager to (make) every gathering in which you sit to be that which comprises goodness, either research into affairs of knowledge, or advice on religious matters, or direction towards a general or particular Maslahah (benefit); or making mention of the blessings of Allaah; or making mention of the superior status of praiseworthy manners and good etiquettes; or warning against that which is detrimental to the wellbeing of one’s religious or worldly (affairs). And the least of this is that they seek the earnings from their occupations by way of permissible (means) and not the forbidden.

Behave well towards the young, the old and your peers. Deal with each of them in a way they deserve and have respect for the one that deserves to be respected and honoured. Be eager to make your congregation relaxed by way of speech that is appropriate and good, even if that was in relation to the worldly (affairs). That is because when permissible (speech) and congregation turns out well, sitting together becomes easy, conversation is made easy, the heart feels tranquillity, and all of that returns to praiseworthiness.

The sensible resolute one achieves abundant goodness through the gatherings of the people, and he becomes more beloved to them than all (beloved things). This is because he enters upon them with what they approve and statements they desire, and the foundation in this is success in taking over control of all the affairs placed before them.

And these affairs become more emphasized on a journey, and that because during a journey sitting together is prolonged and the travellers are in need of having someone who revives their hearts with good statements, the news of events and joke--if all of that truth and not too much--and to assist them with the essential issues of travel. Good etiquettes makes a possessor of it more pleasurable to the people than the pleasure derived from a cold drink, and its influence bears heavier upon their souls than hard stones.

He (Subhaanah) is the one who caused the dissimilarities between His slaves with regards to their manners, their actions and in all of their affairs. Allaah (Alone) is the One Who grants success.

Allaah tied Guidance and striving Together-Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Allaah tied Guidance and
striving Together-Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

Allaah (The Most High) said: ‘’As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths.’’ [Al-Ankaboot: Ayah: 69]

Allaah (subhaanah) tied guidance and striving together, thus the people with the most perfect guidance are those with the greatest striving. And the most obligatory (type) of striving is to strive against the soul, desires, shaytaan and the worldly life. So whoever strives against these four (affairs), Allaah will guide him to the paths of His pleasure that leads to His Paradise. And whoever abandons striving, he will lose guidance in accordance with what he neglected of striving. Al-Junayd (rahimahullaah) said (with regards to the above ayah Ankaboot Ayah: 69):‘’Those who strive hard against their desires in (Our Cause) with repentance, We will guide them to the paths of sincerity.’’

It is not possible to strive against the enemy in the open, except for the one who strives against these enemies inwardly. So whoever is aided against them, he will be victorious against his enemy. And whoever is made to be overcome by them, his enemy will be made victorious over him.

Give the World for Islamic Knowledge

Give the World for Islamic Knowledge

It is reported that Imām Al-Hasan Al-Basrī – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

To learn a single topic of knowledge and teach it to a Muslim is more beloved to me than having the whole world and giving it in the cause of Allāh.

The Hated Muezzin

The Hated Muezzin

It is reported that a man once came to ‘Abdullâh b. ‘Umar – Allâh be pleased with him – and said:

I love you for Allâh.

Ibn ‘Umar replied:

Then bear witness that I hate you for Allâh!

The man asked, “Why?”

He replied, “Because you sing in your adhân (call to prayer), and you take a wage [for calling it]!”

Al-Tabarânî, Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabîr, article 13059; from Shaykh Al-Albânî, Al-Sahîhah 1:104, where he grades it authentic.

The method of pronouncing Dhikr according to the Sufi order

The method of pronouncing Dhikr
according to the Sufi order

(Part No. 8; Page No. 399-400)

Q 1: Why are the Sufis interested in pronouncing the name of Allah rather than referring to His Attributes?

Q 2: Why do Muslims not mention Allah's Name and mention Him through the word of Tawhid La ilaha illa Allah (there is no deity but Allah) and His Attributes?

Q 3: The Sufis claim that Allah's Name bears greater value but the Muslims say that La ilaha illa Allah (there is no deity but Allah) holds the greatest importance.

A: The noble Ayahs and authentic Hadiths reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) indicated that the best of speech is the word of Tawhid La ilaha illa Allah (there is no deity but Allah), according to his saying (peace be upon him): There are more than seventy branches of Iman (Faith/belief), the most superior of which is saying "La Ilaha Illa Allah" He (peace be upon him) had also said: The most preferred words to Allah are four: Subhan Allah (Glorified be Allah), Al-Hamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), la ilaha illa Allah (There is no deity but Allah) and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) .

Moreover, Allah has mentioned this word in His Great book (i.e. the Qur'an) in many places, among which is His Saying (Glorified be He): {Allâh bears witness that Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)}[Surah al Imrán 3:18]. In addition to His Saying (Glorified and Exalted be He): {So know (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) that, Lâ ilâha illallâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), and ask forgiveness for your sin} [Surah Muhammad, 47:19]

Thus, it is prescribed for Muslims to remember Allah using this word: La Ilaha Illa Allah in addition to other good permissible words such as Subhan Allah, Al-hamdullilah, Allahu Akbar and La hawla wala Quwwata Illa Billah (There is neither strength nor power except with Allah).

As for the Sufis' saying: words like "Allah, Allah" or "He, He", this is verily an act of Bid`ah (innovation in religion) and people should not adhere to this, for it had not been reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) or any of his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Therefore, it is an act of Bid`ah, according to the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): Whoever does something that is a not part of this matter of ours (i.e. Islam) will have it rejected The Prophet (may Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) also says: Whoever introduces a practice that is not religiously admitted, it is to be rejected (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim) .

The meaning of his saying (peace be upon him): "it is to be rejected" is that it is unacceptable and people are not allowed to act in accordance with it.

Consequently, it is impermissible for Muslims to worship Allah by observing acts which are not prescribed by Him according to the mentioned Hadiths and other Hadiths reported to the same effect, for Allah (Glorified be He) says denouncing the Mushrikin (those who associate others in worship with Allah): {Or have they partners (with Allâh — false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allâh has not ordained?} [Qur'an 42: 21]

May Allah grant us all success and guide us to what pleases Him! As-salamu `alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)
