Wake me up at such-and-such a time

Wake me up at such-and-such a time

Q 5: It is widely common among people that they may say, before going to sleep, “O guardian angels, wake me up at such-and-such a time.”

A: This is not permissible, in fact, it is a form of major Shirk (associating others in worship with Allah), because it is beseeching others than Allah (عزوجل) and asking a favor from the unseen such as the Jinn (creatures created from fire), idols, and the deceased people...

The Followers of Pharaoh Were Worse Than Polytheists | Explained by Shaykh Sālih al-Fawzān

The Followers of Pharaoh Were Worse

Than Polytheists

Explained by Shaykh Sālih al-Fawzān

Question: Are the followers of Pharaoh considered polytheists with regards to the Lordship of Allāh because they followed Pharaoh in his claim that he was the Lord?

Shaykh al-Fawzān: They were Mu’attilah (those who deny the existence of a Creator), they were not polytheists. They were Mu’attliah. They did not affirm the existence of the Lord. Pharaoh said:

"I am your lord, most high"
(sūrah an-Nāzi`āt 79:24)

Pharaoh said:
I have not known you to have a god other than me.
(sūrah al-Qaşaş 28:38)

He denied the existence of Allāh the Exalted and they believe him in his denial. Thus they became those who deny the existence of the Lord.

All atheists are like this; those who do not affirm the existence of Allāh. And they say everything comes from nature. They say nature is what brings everything into existence.

And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time."
(sūrah al-Jāthiyah 45:24)

They don’t attribute these matters to Allāh the Exalted. These people are called atheists. They are not polytheists. They are those who deny the existence of the Creator. The polytheists are better than them because the polytheists affirm the existence of Allāh but they worship others along with Him. As for atheists, they do not acknowledge the existence of Allāh. And how many of these people are present today!

From the Worst of Mankind

From the Worst of Mankind

 Imaam Bin Baaz

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

Translator: Abu 'Abdis Salaam Al Juyaanee
Source: “Sharhul Kitaabit Tawheed” pages 107-109

This Hadeeth is reported on the authority of Ibn Mas’ood (رضي الله عنه) reachingback to the Prophet ﷺ,

Verily from the worst of mankind are those whom the Hour will be established upon and they are alive, and those whom have taken the graves as places of worship (masaajid).
This is because the Hour will only be established upon the worst of creation. As far as the believers their souls will be taken by a pleasant wind prior to this (i.e. the establishment of the Hour).

Those who take the graves as places of worship are from the worst of mankind because they are a means and cause for the people falling into shirk (polytheism), innovation, and erroneous acts. This is because once the people view such a thing as correct they will naturally conclude and say, “Since they have built (a place of worship over this grave, the occupant of it) must then be supplicated to and called on in times of peril.

However, there is no problem if the grave is in close proximity to the cemetery. This is because the walkway in that case will separate between the two, and this is superior (to masaajid being on top of graves).

This is correct just as we have previously mentioned (when speaking about) extremism, that results in the one whom they are extreme about being taken as an object of worship instead of or along with Allah. Due to this the people exaggerated the status of some of the righteous. They thus, took them as objects of worship instead of or along with Allah. Examples of this are like the graves of Al Hassan (radiAllahu ‘anhu), Al Hussain (radi Allahu ‘anhu), Faatimah (radi Allahu ‘anha) and other than them. This nation has likewise exaggerated the status of the Messenger ﷺ and consequently fallen into (shirk by) worshipping him (by supplicating to him and the like) and seeking his aid in times of peril instead of or along with Allah; this (also happened) in the times of antiquity when the people of Nuh ﷺ exaggerated the status of the righteous until they eventually worshipped them (which is polytheism) as we have already mentioned.

SHALL I INFORM YOU OF SOMETHING MORE FEARFUL THAN THE DAJJAL?

SHALL I INFORM YOU OF SOMETHING

MORE FEARFUL THAN THE DAJJAL?

Shaykh Saalih ibn Fawzaan al Fawzaan

Mahmud bin Labid narrated that Allaah's Messenger [may the peace and salutations of Allaah be upon him] said: “The most dreadful thing which I fear for you is minor polytheism: ar-Riyaa (showing off).'' (reported by Ahmed, by a sound chain)

Shaykh Saalih ibn Fawzaan al Fawzaan Explained:

The Prophet [may the peace and salutations of Allaah be upon him] addressed his companions regarding the trial and harm of the Dajjal (Anti-Christ) then he stood up from his sitting. He made the people busy themselves with discussing the trials and harms of the Dajjal (Anti-Christ) due to fear from him. Severe fear of the Dajjal and his trials afflicted the companions [May Allaah be pleased with them] so when the Prophet [may the peace and salutations of Allaah be upon him] came to them he said: “Shall I inform you of that which I fear for you more than the Dajjal (Anti-Christ)” they replied “Yes! O’ Messenger of Allaah: He said “Minor shirk and it is ar-Riyaa (showing off)”.

Indeed mankind shows off by way of his good actions and wishes people to praise and extol him. This is in contradiction to sincerity to Allaah, this is polytheism because this action was done for the sake of people.

The meaning of polytheism: is to worship other than Allaah and this is found in showing off. So the person that is showing off is worshipping other than Allaah because he has performed an act of worship for the sake of the people. He did not do it for the sake of Allaah. Indeed Allaah has described the hypocrites to be from those who show off to the people, therefore showing off is from the characteristics of the hypocrites. Indeed the Prophet [May Allaah be pleased with them] has mentioned (showing off) to be from minor polytheism (shirk). Minor polytheism doesn’t exit one from the religion but it leads to major polytheism and it nullifies the actions that were performed and it becomes inconvenient upon the person who performed it without benefit. As for the major polytheism then it nullifies all actions that one has performed.

The believer is one that stays away from polytheism. However the problem is in minor polytheism. The believer has to be cautious from it, since (showing off in worship) is a type of polytheism that is hidden. It is in the heart and none has knowledge of what is in the heart except Allaah. The Prophet [may the peace and salutations of Allaah be upon him] feared for the best nation and they are the Companions. The Companions feared it for themselves because the number of those who are saved from (falling into) it are small - except for those that Allaah has saved.

It is upon the Muslim to fear showing off. The Muslin shouldn’t praise himself; it is upon the Muslim to hide his actions whatever the actions may be, it is upon the Muslim to make his intention, his apparent and hidden actions sincere for Allaah. If love for praise occurs in the Muslim’s mind or if he is exposed to showing off then it upon him to repulse it and there is no harm upon him, if it becomes grave and persists with him then his actions will be void and this is very dangerous because this is what occurs in the mind of the people. Mankind like to be praised and extolled and if this occur in a person’s actions and acts of worship, it will become ar-Riyaa.
Allaah said:

''So woe unto those performers of Salat (prayers) (hypocrites), Who delay their Salat (prayer) from their stated fixed times, those who do good deeds only to be seen (of men), and refuse Al-Ma'un.'' [Surat Al-Mā`ūn 4-7]

Allaah has promised them al-Wayl [a valley in Hell]. Allaah said:

''So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.'' [Surat Al-Kahf 110]

This includes minor and major polytheism (and associates none as a partner in the worship of his Lord), Allaah further mentioned: “I am Independent of all the partners (ascribed to me). Whoever performs a deed while associating partners with Me, I will leave him and his Shirk.”1, Allaah doesn’t accept actions except that they are sincere seeking his face and it has to be according to the Sunnah of the Prophet [may the peace and salutations of Allaah be upon him].

Do the awliyaa’ have the ability to answer one’s prayers? By Shaykh al Fawzaan

Answering a Doubt from the Grave

 Worshippers by Shaykh Fawzan

Do the awliyaa’ have the ability to answer one’s prayers?

Q: He says: Noble Shaykh, may Allah give you success. Some of the grave worshippers say, we pray to the wali (saint), and he answers some of our prayers. So because he has the ability to do this, this means it’s permissible to pray to him. So how do we respond to this?
A. (Shaykh Fawzan)
My brother, the achievement of a goal by way of shirk does not prove that it’s permissible, because this is a test and a trial, and gradual punishment from Allah azza wa jall. He may be punishing you gradually with this.
Or the devil who is present at the grave or tomb is answering your needs in order to mislead you from the path of Allah, because he may have the ability and he can’t be seen. He might respond to your need and bring this to you from somewhere far off.
This is either a gradual punishment from Allah, or it is from the devil, intending to mislead you, or it happened as a decree and a due measure. It was already decreed for you to obtain this need at this time and this place, by the decree and due measure of Allah, not because you called upon this dead person.
And the point is that Allah has forbidden this. That’s enough. It’s enough that Allah forbade this. “So don’t call upon anyone other than Allah.” (Qur’an, 72:18) This is enough. So if they say, “This is not enough for me, and I will call upon other than Allah”, then say, “Then you have destroyed yourself.”

Allaah's CURSE IS UPON...!

Allaah's CURSE IS UPON...!

Muslim reports that Ali bin Abi Talib رضي الله عنه said:

"Allah's Messenger صلي الله عليه وسلم informed me about four Judgments (of Allaah): (1) Allaah's curse is upon the one who slaughters (devoting his sacrifice) to anything other than Allah; (2) Allaah's curse is upon the one who curses his own parents; (3) Allaah's curse is upon the one who shelters an heretic (who has brought a Bid'ah in religion); (4) Allaah's curse is upon the one who alters the landmarks (who changes boundary lines)."

The Categories of Istighaathah from the Explanation of Kashfush-Shubuhaat (Removal of Doubts)

The Categories of Istighaathah from
the Explanation of Kashfush-Shubuhaat
(Removal of Doubts)

Stated Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Abdul-Wahhaab in Kashfush-Shubuhaat (Removal of Doubts):
“So that only His salvation (istighaathah) would be sought, and such that all acts of worship would be directed to Allaah alone.”
Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen’s (d.1420H) explanation of this statement is as follows:
The word istighaathah means to seek relief and salvation at times of hardship and when on the verge of destruction. It can be divided into four categories:
  • The First Category: Seeking relief and salvation (istigaathah) from Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) which is from the best and most perfect of actions. It was the practice of the Messengers (alaihimus-salaam) and their followers. And the proof of this can be found in the statement of Allaah (tabaaraka wa ta’aala),
“Remember when you sought the help of your Lord, and He answered you: Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand angels, following one another in succession.” [Sooratul-Anfaal 8:9]
  • The Second Category: Seeking salvation (istighaathah) from the dead or from individuals who are living but absent and unable to provide any assistance; this type of (istighaathah) is polytheism (Shirk). This is because this type of action is not done except by someone who believes that those who he is calling upon possess some type of control and influence over creation. So they have attributed a share of Lordship (ar-ruboobiyyah) to the creation. Allaah (tabaaraka wa ta’aala) says,
Isn’t the One who responds to the desperate whenever they call upon Him; who removes the harm; and who makes you inheritors of the earth? Can there be another besides Allaah? Little do you reflect?” [Sooratun-Naml 27:62]
  • The Third Category: Seeking relief and salvation from those who are living and able to provide assistance. This is permissible and it is just like seeking their aid. Allaah said concerning the story of Moosaa (alaihis-salaam),
“And the one from his faction who called for help against one of his enemies, so Moosaa struck him and [unintentionally] killed him.” [Sooratul-Qasas 28:15]
  • The Fourth Category: Seeking relief and salvation from a living person who is unable to provide the necessary assistance without believing that he possesses any special influence over the creation. An example of this is if help was sought from someone who is paralyzed to repel an advancing army of the enemy. This is considered useless and mockery of the one whose aid was sought. So this action is prohibited for this reason and because it might be interpreted by others to suggest that the one whose aid was sought despite his handicap possessed a hidden power that allows him to save people in times of adversity.

Corruption of Mankind

Corruption of Mankind

Kitaabut Tawheed
Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan bin Abdillaah al-Fawzaan
Originally Produced By Daru Ahlil Athar

Allaah has created his creation so as to worship Him and has prepared for them that which will aid them in this from His provisions. He ta'ala says

"And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). I seek not any provision from them (i.e. provision for themselves or for My creatures) nor do I ask that they should feed Me (i.e. feed themselves or My creatures). Verily, Allaah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong."[1]

The soul, if it is left upon its fitrah (natural state) affirms Allaah's divinity and has love for Allaah, worships Him alone, and does not ascribe partners to Him.

However the Shayaateen from the Jinn and the Ins (mankind) corrupts and deviates it from that with what they reveal to one another by way of beautification in speech and deceptions. Tawheed is centered in the fitrah. Shirk is foreign and inserted into it. Allaah ta'ala says:

"So set you (O Muhammad) your face towards the religion of pure Islamic Monotheism Hanifa (worship none but Allaah Alone) Allaah's Fitrah (i.e. Allaah's Islamic Monotheism), with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Khalqilaah (i.e. the Religion of Allaah Islamic Monotheism), that is the straight religion, but most of men know not" [2]

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said "Every child born is born upon the fitrah, however his parents make him into a Jew or a Christian or a Pagan"[3] So the root of the children is Tawheed.

The religion was Islaam from the time of Aadam (alaihi salaam) and until those who came after him from his progeny for many generations.

Allaah ta'ala says:

"Mankind were one community and Allaah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings" [4]

The first occurrence of shirk and deviance upon the aqeedah was with the people of Nuh (alaihi salaam)

"Verily, We have inspired you (O Muhammad SAW) as We inspired Nuh (Noah) and the Prophets after him;" [5]

Ibnu Abbaas said "There was between Aadam and Nuh (alaihima salaam) ten generations, all of them upon Islaam"

Ibnul Qayyim said "This comment (of Ibnu Abbaas) is clearly correct for the reading of Abi ibn Ka'b of the verse "So they differed and then Allaah sent the Prophets"

Allaah's statement affirms this when He says

"Mankind were but one community (i.e. on one religion - Islaamic Monotheism), then they differed (later), and had not it been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord, it would have been settled between them regarding what they differed" [6]

The sending of the Prophets was due to the differing from that which they were upon from the correct religion. Just as the Arabs were upon the religion of Ibraaheem (alaihi salaam) until 'Amru bin Lahee al-Khazaa'ee surfaced and changed the religion of Ibraaheem. He erected idols in the land of the Arabs and in the land of al-Hijaaz in a specific manner until they were worshipped besides Allaah and shirk began to spread in the Holy lands and its surrounding it until Allaah sent His Prophet Muhammad, the seal of the Prophets (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

He called the people to Tawheed and to following the path of Ibraaheem and fought the true Jihaad until the creed of Tawheed and the path of Ibraaheem was returned to and the idols were destroyed. Allaah completed with him His religion and completed His favor upon all of the worlds. This methodology continued through out the noble generations from the beginning of this Ummah until ignorance began to spread in the later generations. Many (false) ideologies infiltrated it and shirk returned to many of this Ummah because of callers to misguidance and building structures over the graves in an effort to glorify the Awliyyaa' and Saaliheen (righteous individuals) claiming love for them until monuments were built over their graves.

They were taken as idols of worship besides Allaah by many ways this included du'a, seeking assistance, slaughtering, and sacrifice at their locations.

They called shirk Tawassul (means of drawing closer to Allaah thru worship) with the righteous and expression of their love for them and not worship of them as they claimed.

They have forgotten that this was the excuse of the pagans before them when they said,

""We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allaah" [7]

Even with this shirk falling upon the mankind past and present you found the majority of them believing in Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah but ascribing partners to Allaah in their worship as Allaah ta'ala says:

"And most of them believe not in Allaah except that they attribute partners unto Him"

They do not deny the existence of their Lord; only a small number of mankind did, such as Phir'awn, atheists, and the communists present in this era. Their denial is from their being blatantly arrogant. They are still compelled to testify this inside (their hearts) as Allaah says:

"And they belied them (those Ayah) wrongfully and arrogantly, though their own selves were convinced thereof" [8]

Their intellects know full well that every creation has to have a creator, every thing in existence has to have one who brought it into existence, and the order of this great disciplined and complicated matter has to have one who has power over it , wise, and maintains its order possessing all knowledge of it. Whoever denies these facts then he is either void of any intellect or blatantly arrogant and has limited his intellect and suppressed himself and this of course has not goal to it.

Ayat Al-Shaytan Khomeini: Seeking Aid From the Dead (And Stones and Mud) Is Not Shirk

Ayat Al-Shaytan Khomeini: Seeking Aid From
the Dead (And Stones and Mud) Is Not Shirk

Seeking aid from the living or the dead in that in which they have no power or capability is a clear instance of shirk (polytheism, assocation of partners with Allaah in worship), the greatest of all sins. The books of the Shia are full of this and it resembles the way of the extreme Sufis. The Shia and Sufis have a historical connection with each other and grave worship entered the Sufis through the Shia.

Seeking Aid From the Dead and From Stones and Mud is Not Shirk

Al-Khomeini writes in Kashf al-Asrar, in response to the objection, "It can be said that Shirk is to request a need from the dead because there is not benefit or harm (that can arise) from a dead prophet or imaam, because they are but like inanimate (lifeless) things" the following:

"And the answer to this presumption: First: You did not explain to us the meaning of shirk and kufr such that we can consider everything we desire to be shirk according to your opinion. And after it has become clear that shirk is to seek something from someone besides Allaah upon the consideration that that (other person or thing) is a Lord (rabb). But whatever is besides that is not shirk. There is no difference in that between the living and the dead, until even if you seek need from a stone or mud (in the ground), it is not shirk, even though it is a vain and false action."

...........................................................................................................................................
This justification here is the very same as the one used by Sufis who claim that directing worship to others besides Allaah, from the loftiest and greatest of them, supplication (du'a) and seeking rescue (istighaathah) and the likes, is not shirk, until and unless the person believes in Ruboobiyyah for the one that he is invoking. And this is opposed to the understanding of Shirk one gains from the Qur'an at even just a cursory glance.

Writing ‘Ya Allaah & Ya Muhammad’

Writing
‘Ya Allaah & Ya Muhammad’

by
Rabee’ ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee
Translated by
Abbas Abu Yahya
The Question:

A lot of what we see in certain Masajid is ‘Ya Allaah & Ya Muhammad’ (O Allaah & O Muhammad) written on the Mihrab, is it permissible to pray in the likes of these Masajid?

The answer:

This is clear from what we have seen in Pakistan and Afghanistan – with great regret – I swear by Allaah we saw this written in the cars of the Mujahideen; actually those who claim to be Mujahideen! And they would not accept any advice, they would continue upon these aspects of Shirk! You would see it written in their shops and their Masajid: ‘Ya Allaah, Ya Ali, Ya Ghawth, Ya Hussain, Ya AbdulQadir, Ya such and such!!’ as well as other aspects of Shirk!
Seeking aid from other than Allaah is Shirk; by saying ‘Ya Muhammad’, then this is committing Shirk with Allaah (associating partners to Allaah). Muhammad was the Messenger of Allaah, the slave of Allaah and His Messenger –alayhi as-Sallat wa Sallam. Therefore, if one says ‘Ya Allaah and Ya Muhammad’, then that person has made Muhammad as an equal to Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala.

The Messenger –alayhi as-Sallat wa Sallam- did not come except to destroy this polytheism, and to rectify the deviated nation and at the head of what they had was committing Shirk (associating) with Allaah -Azza wa Jal. The Messenger came to purify the Dunyaa, the hearts, the minds and intellects from Shirk with Allaah –Azza wa Jal- and the filth connected with Shirk.

He –alayhi as-Sallat wa Sallam- taught us pure Tawheed with the texts of the Qur’aan, the texts of the Sunnah and practically implementing them. He –alayhi as-Sallat wa Sallam- ordered us to level the graves, and to destroy idols.
The Messenger –alayhi as-Sallat wa Sallam- said:

‘Do not undertake journeys except to three Masajid – only these, not to graves, nor any place [for worship] – the Masjid al-Haraam, and this masjid of mine, and Masjid al-Aqsa.’
This is because these Masajid were built by the Prophets for the Tawheed of Allaah having Ikhlaas (Sincerity) of the Deen for Allaah – Azza wa Jal.

This action of writing ‘Allaah & Muhammad’ began in al-Madinah – since we know these things we can evaluate it – we knew the plots of the Ahl-ul-Bida’. There was a man named Siraaj Rahman a colleague of mine in the University and he was from the students of Abul-Hasan an-Nadawi – I don’t know whether – I saw this in Kenya or a story had been narrated to him that this had begun to spread in al-Madinah. Anyway, he mentioned that Abul-Hasan an-Nadawi said the statement: ‘Allaah & Muhammad’ and this is disbelief, what they mean by this is that Muhammad is a partner to Allaah –Azza wa Jal; Allaah & Muhammad are equal.

There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah; I testify that there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, I testify that there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger; this is the highest status for this Noble Prophet –alayhi as-Sallat wa Sallam.
The Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Do not over praise me, like the Christians over praised the son of Maryam. Indeed I am a slave of Allaah and His Messenger.’

I have seen this clearly and I would have waged war against it, and if I saw it in a Masjid I would advise the Imam of the Masjid. Likewise in Masjid al-Qiblatayn – Masjid al-Amoodi -, I spoke to the Imam, but he did not do anything! So I spoke to al-Amoodi who was responsible for the Masjid, and he hastened – may Allaah reward him with goodness- and effaced these things.

And in the Masjid near my home in al-Madina they had written ‘Allaah & Muhammad’ so I advised the Imam and he said: ‘we will change it, we will change it.’ But he kept postponing it and did not change it! There was a good young man present who said: ‘I’ll sort it out.’ Then he went and covered it, and that was the end of that, and all praise be to Allaah.
One day I was coming from Batthan and entered Madinah and there was a pickup truck in front of me and it had ‘Ya Allaah Ya Muhammad’ written on it in red. So I followed him and he began speeding up, he noticed that I was following him, so he began to speed up even more, so I gave chase and pursued him until we reached Qurban, he stopped his car and got out and said to me: ‘Shall I wipe it off?’ and I hadn’t even spoken to him yet! He knew and felt this is what I was pursuing him about, so I told him ‘Yes, wipe it off.’

This confirms that there is a battle going on, the battle of these grave worshipping deviants in the land of Tawheed!

Khalid bin Al-Walid killing the Devil at the idol Al-Uzza

Khalid bin Al-Walid killing
the Devil at the idol Al-Uzza

An-Nasa’i recorded that Abu At-Tufayl said,

“When the Messenger of Allah conquered Makkah, he sent Khalid bin Al-Walid to the area of Nakhlah where the idol of Al-`Uzza was erected on three trees of a forest. Khalid cut the three trees and approached the house built around it and destroyed it. When he went back to the Prophet and informed him of the story, the Prophet said to him,

(Go back and finish your mission, for you have not finished it.) Khalid went back and when the custodians who were also its servants of Al-`Uzza saw him, they started invoking by calling Al-`Uzza! When Khalid approached it, he found a naked woman whose hair was untidy and who was throwing sand on her head. Taghut is anything in which a servant exceeds the limits whether it is worship, following, or obedience

Taghut is anything in which a servant exceeds the limits whether it is worship, following, or obedience

Fifth question of Fatwa No. 5966

Q 5: When can we single someone out as Taghut?

A: Someone can be declared as Taghut (false god) in case that they call to Shirk (associating others in worship with Allah), to offer `Ibadah (worship) to them, claim knowing matters of Ghayb (Unseen), or judge according to anything other than what Allah has revealed and the like. Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah be merciful with him) said: Taghut is anything in which a servant exceeds the limits whether in the field of `Ibadah, following, or obedience.
May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Slaughtering animals for other than Allah

Slaughtering animals

for other than Allah

Fifth question from Fatwa No. 4042

Q5: What is the ruling on people who vow to sacrifice for anyone other than Allah, namely, for the dead. Yet, at the same time, they say, for instance, "O Lord! if my son or my daughter succeeds, I will sacrifice a sheep for you, O shaykh so and so"?

A: Making vows to anyone other than Allah is an act of Shirk (associating others in worship with Allah). Likewise, offering sacrifices to anyone other than Allah is also an act of Shirk. Allah (Glorified be He) says:
( Part No : 1, Page No:184)

Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 270 And whatever you spend for spendings (e.g., in Sadaqah - charity for Allâh’s Cause) or whatever vow you make, be sure Allâh knows it all. He also says:Surah Al-An`am, 6: 162 Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Verily, my Salât (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists). Surah Al-An`am, 6: 163 He has no partner. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah curses the one who sacrifices to other than Allah… Making vows is included in Allah's saying:Surah Al-An`am, 6: 162 my sacrifice

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Traps of iblees

Traps of Iblees

by Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah rahimahullaah
from At-Tafseer Al-Qayyim of Shaikh Ibn Al-Qayyim [Al-Hijra magazine]

It is not possible to encompass one of Iblees' evils, let alone all of them. Since Iblees' evil is of six types, Iblees remains behind the son of Adam until he gets him to do one or more of these six evils.

THE FIRST EVIL IS THE EVIL OF KUFR AND SHIRK and enmity to Allâh and His Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. If he gains this from the son of Adam, his moaning is eased, and he rests from his ordeal with this man. Further, this is the first thing Iblees wants from al-'Abd (the worshipper). If Iblees gains this, he makes this person part of his army, one of his soldiers, and he appoints him as a deputy or agent against other human beings. Then, this person becomes one of the deputies or callers of Iblees.

If he despairs of enticing him with the first evil, and if this person is one of those for whom it was written that he would be a Muslim in his mother's womb, Iblees tries the SECOND CLASS OF EVIL. THIS IS BID'AH (innovation). Iblees loves Bid'ah more than debauchery and disobedience because the harm of Bid'ah is in the essence of the religion. Moreover, it is an unrepentable sin and is against the call of the messengers and is a call to a message different from the one conveyed by Ar-Rasool. Bid'ah is a gate to Kufr and Shirk. Therefore, if Iblees gains the performance of Bid'ah from a person and makes him one of the people of Bid'ah, he also becomes one of his agents and a caller of his.

If Iblees fails and is unable to trap Al-'Abd at this class, and if he is one of those who were granted by Allâh the gift of As-Sunnah and hatred of the people of Bid'ah and error, he proceeds to the THIRD CLASS OF EVIL, which is the class of MAJOR SINS in their various forms.

Iblees is very covetous of letting a person fall into major sin, especially if he is a scholar who is followed. Iblees is covetous of that, so that he may repel people from him and spread his sins and disobedience amongst the people. He uses some people as his agents to spread this person's sins under the false pretence that this will help them to get closer to Allâh. But in fact this person is the deputy of Iblees without knowing it. For those who would like abomination to be spread amongst the believers there is a great torment in this life and in the Hereafter especially if they take charge of spreading about enormities, not out of advice, but by obeying Iblees and being his agent. All this is to repel people from the Scholar and from his benefit.

Furthermore, the sins of this person (scholar), even if they reach the sky, are less to Allâh than the sins of those who would like to spread his sins about. The scholar's sins are wrongdoing to himself. If he seeks forgiveness from Allâh and repents, Allâh will accept his repentance, and He will change his bad deeds to good deeds. However, the sin of those who spread about abominations are doing wrong to the believers by looking for their mistakes and by intending to expose them. Allâh is in close observation, and He knows about this ambuscade. Nothing hidden in the chest or soul is hidden to Allâh.

If Iblees is unable to snare Al-'Abd at this degree he moves him to the FOURTH CLASS, or the MINOR SINS. These sins may ruin a person if they accumulate. That is why Ar-Rasool sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, Be aware of the minor sins, because the simile of the minor sin is like the people who went to a desert. Then he sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam mentioned a Hadeeth the meaning of which is that every one of them brought a stick of wood until they had kindled a huge fire (just as the minor sins add up little by little until they become a major sin). The person continues taking the matter of minor sins easily until he considers them inconsequential. Therefore, a person who commits major sins but fears their effect is in a better condition than he is.

If the Al-'Abd has prevented Iblees from trapping him at this level, he moves him to the fifth level. The FIFTH LEVEL IS TO OCCUPY HIM WITH PERMISSIBLE THINGS that do not gain him reward or punishment. However, the punishment of this level is caused by passing the reward missed by being occupied with these deeds. If Al-'Abd has kept Iblees from succeeding at this level, and if he is careful about his time, being covetous with it, knows the value of moments, and knows the value of what comes of comfort or torment, Iblees transfers him to the sixth level. The SIXTH CLASS is to OCCUPY HIM WITH DEEDS OF LESSER REWARD to keep virtue away from him and to prevent him from attaining the reward of the favoured deed.

Therefore, he orders him to do a good action with less reward if that includes leaving a better action. Very few people are aware of this. Because if a person feels a strong urge to some kind of obedience, he does not doubt that it is true obedience and that he is getting closer to Allâh. He never thinks that this call is from Iblees because he believes that Iblees never calls one to do good. Therefore, he thinks that this call is from Allâh. Actually he is excused because he never knew that Iblees would call one to seventy doors of good deeds either to get him to one door of evil or to let a better deed than these seventy deeds pass away from him.

This cannot be known except by a light from Allâh, a light he instils in the heart of Al-'Abd. The source of this type of knowledge is following the way of Ar-Rasool sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam and taking care of the levels of deeds with Allâh, the deeds of His favoured ones, the deeds more pleasing to Him, and those more beneficial to Al-'Abd, and deeds that have more Naseehah (guidance) from Allâh, His Rasool, His Book, and His believing worshippers. No one has this type of knowledge except the inheritors of Ar-Rasool sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, his deputies in the Ummah, and his successors on earth. In addition, most of the creation is screened from this. This call does not come to their hearts. Allâh gives His favour to whomever He wills from among His worshippers.

If Al-'Abd prevents Iblees from trapping him at any of these six levels, and if it becomes difficult for Iblees, he empowers his party of jinn and human beings with different kinds of harm, IMPUTING DISBELIEF TO HIM, CALLING HIM MISGUIDED AND AN INNOVATOR, WARNING PEOPLE AGAINST HIM, and intending to weaken him and to disturb his heart. Iblees, by using this method, tries to confuse this person's thinking and tries to PREVENT PEOPLE FROM BENEFITING FROM HIM. Therefore Iblees expends his utmost effort to empower the defenders of falsehood, from human beings and from jinn, against him. Then the believer is at war until death. Whenever he gives up, he is hurt or is taken captive. Hence the believer is in Jihad until he meets with Allâh.
