Shaikh Salim at-Taweel (hafidhahullaah) said,

quote:

"When people praise you, people are trully praising Allaah's hijab (screen) which He screened your sins with. As-Sateer (The Concealer) is from Allaah's Names."

What to say when praised

Allaahumma laa tu'aakhithnee bimaa yaqooloona, waghfir lee maa laa ya'lamoona [waj'alnee khayram-mimmaa yadhunnoon].

Translation: O Allaah , do not call me to account for what they say, and forgive me for what they have no knowledge of [and make me better than they imagine].

Reference: Al-Bukhari, Al-'Adabul-Mufrad no. 761. See Al-Albani, Sahih Al-'Adabul-Mufrad (no. 585). The portion between brackets if from Al-Bayhaqi, Shu'ab Al-Iman 4/228, and comes another account.

Note: this du'aa has been reported as the statement of:

- Aboo Bakr as-Siddeeq (Usd al-Ghaabah in Aboo Bakr's biography)
- Ibn 'Umar, the freed slave of 'Afrah (Az-Zuhd of Ibn Mubaarak, p.14)
- "One of the Companions," unnamed (Az-Zuhd of Ahmad, p.205)
- Yazeed ibn Maysarah (Hilyat al-Awliyaa, 5/240)
- Al-Awzaa'ee (Shu'ab al-Eemaan #4875)
- "Some of the Salaf," unnamed (Shu'ab al-Eemaan #4876)

None of them attributed it to the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), so it seems to be that the best-case scenario is that it is from Aboo Bakr and then some of the taabi'oon and those after them.

How Can The Believer Stay Away From Showing Off

Questioned posed to the Allaamah Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalee (may Allaah preserve him):

Q. Noble Shaykh, how can the believer stay away from showing off in his actions and is the praise of the people for him because of his worship something that can harm him?

A. "The actions are based upon the intentions. Therefore the one who has been praised by the people for the action of good and he didn't do the action except seeking the pleasure of Allaah, the praise of the people does not harm him. Their praise of him is actually a testimony from them for that which he i upon and this doesn't harm him. If he senses something in his heart of amazement when he is praised by the people or when he hears the one who praises him, it is upon him to turn to Allaah azza wa jall and it is upon him to say the narrated supplication on the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam): 

"Allaahumma Innee A'oodhu Bika An Ushrika Bika Shay-an 'A lamuhu Wa As-tagh-firuka Limaa T'alam"

 
-Oh Allaah indeed I seek refuge with you that I associate anything with you that I am aware of. And I seek Your forgiveness for that which You know.-

With the permission of Allaah that which is in the heart of weakness or amazement will leave with might of Allaah and His power."

The Beauty of avoiding Riya'a

Muhammad ibn Al-Qaasim said:

 I accompanied Muhammad ibn Aslam for more than 20 years, and I never saw him pray two supererogatory rak’ahs, except on the day of jum’ah. On one occasion, I heard him take an oath: “By Allaah If I was able to pray a supererogatory prayer where my two angels could not see me; I would do so out of fear of showing off. He used to enter his house and close his door. I was never aware of what he would get up to until I heard his young son conversing how he used to cry. However, when he used to go outside, he would wash his face and apply kuhl, and no sign of him crying would be visible. He used to provide for a people and clothe them, but when he would send his Messenger, he used to say: Make sure they don’t know who sent you.
