Abdul Malik ibn ‘Umayr (رضي الله عنه) reported:

👤Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) said:

“Whoever employs a man among his loved ones or relatives, employing him for no other reason besides that (no skill, no qualification, only the fact that he is a relative), then he has betrayed: Allah, His messenger (ﷺ) and the believers.

When one complains he is giving the message that he wants others to help him by either stopping whatever is hurting him or by doing something to help him. The servant has been commanded by his Lord to ask Him alone, not His creation. 

'Umar Ibn al-Khattāb (radiyaAllāhu'anhu) used to read in the morning prayer (fajr): 

إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ 

"I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh. [Yūsuf 12:86]

First Night of Ramadan

It is reported that on the first night of Ramaḍān, ‘Umar – Allāh be pleased with him – would pray Maghrib, then say (to the people):

Sit down. Then he would give a small address: Verily the fasting of this month has been made a duty upon you, and standing in night prayer has not been made a duty upon you, but those amongst you who can stand in prayer should do so, for it is from the extra good deeds about which Allāh told us: so whoever cannot stand in prayer, let him sleep on his bed.

And beware of saying: I will fast if so and so fasts and I will stand in night prayer if so and so stands in prayer. Whoever fasts or stands in night prayer, he must make this for Allāh. And you should know that you are in prayer as long as you are waiting for a prayer.

Minimize any vain or false speech in the houses of Allāh (mosques; he said this two or three times). Let none of you fast a few days before the month (in order to avoid missing the beginning of the month; he said this three times). And do not fast until you see [the crescent of the new month] unless it is overcast. If it is overcast, count [the previous month] as 30 days. Then do not break your fasts until you see the night upon the mountain (i.e. you are sure the sun has set).

TAKE MY BLOOD NOT MY RELIGION

Suwayd b. Ghafalah rahimahullaah said: 

'Umar b. al-Khattaab (d. 23H) - radiallaahu 'anhu - said to me: 

"Perhaps you will live long after me, so obey the ruler even if he is an Abyssinian slave. And even if he oppresses you, be patient; and if he beats you, remain patient and if he calls you to a matter that is detrimental to your religion then say: I hear and obey (you), take my blood but not my religion. And do not split away from the Jamaa'ah (the united body of the Muslims)." 

Explanation by Imaam al-Aajurree rahimahullaah:

"So if a person says: 'What is your understanding concerning the statement of 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhu) which he mentioned?' Then it is said to him (i.e. the questioner): "It is possible - and Allaah, the Most High, knows best - for us to say: 'Whoever is put in authority over you whether he is from the Arab or other than them, black or white, or a foreigner then you must obey him in that which there is no disobedience in it to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. Moreover, if he prevents you from your rights, he beats you unjustly (without due right), he violates your honour, and takes your wealth (by force), then that should not make you revolt against him by drawing your sword out to fight him. And do not go out revolting alongside a Khaarijee to fight him, and do not incite others to rebel against him but rather be patient with him.'

And it could also be understood that "if he calls you to a matter which is detrimental to your religion" to mean other than this viewpoint; and it could be taken to mean that he orders you with killing someone who is not deserving of being killed, or to cut a limb off someone who does not deserve that, or to beat someone who it is impermissible to beat, or to forcibly take someone's wealth who it is not right to take his wealth, or to wrong or oppress someone whom it is neither permissible for him nor for you to oppress. So if he says to you: 'If you do not do that which I order you with then I will certainly kill you or severely beat you.' Then say: Take my blood but not my religion.' That is due to the statement of the Prophet (ﷺ): "There is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator." And his (ﷺ) statement: "Obedience is only in that which is good."

A man might have ten qualities, nine of them good and one bad, but the nine good ones can be spoiled by the one bad quality. Beware of the slips and faults of youth.

It is reported from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar:


When ʿUmar b. Al-Khaṭṭāb arrived in Al-Shām, he said to Abū ʿUbaydah – Allāh be pleased with them: “Take us to your home.” Abū ʿUbaydah said, “And what will you do with my home?” ʿUmar replied, “Just take us there.” Abū ʿUbaydah said, “You only want to cry your eyes out over me.” So he entered his house and saw nothing [by way of furnishings] in it. ʿUmar asked, “Where are your things? I see nothing but rags, a water-skin and a dish (tray), and you are a governor! Do you have food?” So Abū ʿUbaydah went over to an old pail (bucket) and took out some scraps, and ʿUmar began to weep. Abu ʿUbaydah said to him, “I told you you would cry your eyes out over me. O Commander of the Believers, sufficient for you from the dunyā is what delivers you to your place of rest.” ʿUmar said, “The dunyā changed us all except you Abū ʿUbaydah.”

“Stick with your true brothers. You can live in comfort with them, as they are a delight in times of ease, and you can lean on them in times of hardship. Assume the best about your brother until he comes with something that should alarm you from him. Avoid your enemy, and beware of befriending anyone but the trustworthy, and there is no trust for the one who doesn’t fear Allāh. Do not befriend the corrupt, as he will teach you his corruption, and do not reveal your secrets to him, and only consult those who fear Allāh, the Exalted.”

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla’Allaahu Alayhi wa Salam) said:

I saw myself (in a dream) entering Paradise, and there I saw Ar-Rumaysa’ – the wife of Abu Talhah – and I heard the sound of footsteps. I said, “Who is this?” He said, “It is Bilal.” And I saw a palace, in the courtyard of which there was a young woman. I said, “Whose (palace) is this?” They said, “(It is) ‘Umar’s.” I wanted to go in and look around, but then I remembered your protective jealousy. ‘Umar said, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O’ Messenger of Allaah! Would I feel jealous towards you?”

[Narrated by Muslim 2394, and Bukhaari 3476 & 6620]

According to another report the Messenger of Allaah (Salla’Allaahu Alayhi wa Salam) said: Whilst I was sleeping, I saw myself in Paradise, and there was a woman doing wudoo’ beside a palace. I said, “Whose palace is this?” They said, “(It is) ‘Umar’s.” Then I remembered your protective jealousy so I turned away. ‘Umar wept and said, “Would I feel protective jealousy towards you, O’ Messenger of Allaah?”

[Narrated by Muslim 2395]

Ibn ‘Umar said:

Abu Moosa Al-Ash’ari gave a mat to ‘Umar’s wife ‘Aatikah Bint Zayd, and I think that it was one cubit and a handspan. ‘Umar saw it with her and said, “Where did you get this from?” She said, “Abu Moosa Al-Ash’ari gave it to me.” ‘Umar took it and hit her with it, then he said, “Bring Abu Moosa to me.” So he was brought to him and he (Abu Moosa Al-Ash’ari) said, “Don’t be hasty, O’ Ameer Al-Mu’mineen (Leader of the believers).” ‘Umar said, “What made you give gifts to my womenfolk?” Then ‘Umar took it and hit him with it, and said, “Take it, we have no need for it.”

From Aslam the servant of Umar, that Umar ibn al-Khattaab arrived in Shaam, a man from the Christians made food for him, so he said to Umar; I would love that you and you companions come to me and honor me (and he was a man from the nobles of Shaam) so Umar said to him:

"We do not enter your churches because of the images inside them."

‘Umar bin al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

من قال: انه عالم فهو جاهل, و من قال: انه مؤمن فهو كافر, و من قال: انه في الجنة فهو في النار

“Whoever says he is an alim (learned person) then he is ignorant, and

whoever says he is a believer then he is a kaafir, and

whoever says he is in paradise then he is in the fire.”

Umar bin al-khattaab: “If you see that one of you has slipped (i.e. by sins), correct him, pray for him and do not help Shaytaan against him (by insulting him, etc.)” Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 15/256.
