Seek refuge from the misguiding Fitna

Seek refuge from the misguiding Fitna

Explained by Shaykh Salih Āli Shaykh

Translated by Rasheed ibn Estes Barbee

Imam Ahmad said, “So I asked Allah to grant me the memorization of the Quran, but I did not ask for it in a state of well-being. So, I did not memorize the Quran except while in prison chained up.

No doubt this is a tremendous statement that shows that the person should be mindful in their supplication and always ask Allah the Exalted, for pardon and wellbeing. When you ask your Lord, ask that it be granted with well-being, for you do not know what may happen to you. Perhaps what you seek may come only through an illness that incapacitates you, or through the loss of your children and family, leaving you alone in your home. Perhaps it may come only through an exile that you neither desire nor choose. Therefore, always ask your Lord that His blessings come with pardon and well-being.

Like this is seeking refuge with Allah from Fitna (trials), meaning the Fitna that causes misguidance. Therefore, when a supplicant prays that Allah the Exalted, protects them from Fitna, scholars have said that it is best to seek refuge from the Fitna that misleads people. One should say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the Fitna that misleads" or "from the Fitna that leads people astray." Or one may say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being led astray in my religion," or something similar. This is because good things can also be a Fitna. Family can be a trial, and wealth can be a trial. These are things that a person inevitably deals with—one must marry, have children, and possess wealth; these are necessities of life. However, these are forms of trials that come from good things, yet they may lead some people astray.

For this reason, a person should seek refuge in Allah the Exalted, from misleading trials.

Affliction to Knowledge & its People

Affliction to Knowledge & its People

Ibn Hazm (رحمه الله) said:

“There is no affliction more harmful to knowledge and its people than intruders into it — those who are not from its true people. They are ignorant yet think they know, they corrupt yet believe they are righteous.”

The Companion Hudhaifah Explaining How to Know Whether You Have Been Afflicted with Fitnah or Not

The Companion Hudhaifah Explaining How

to Know Whether You Have Been

Afflicted with Fitnah or Not

From Hudhaifah, Allaah be pleased with him, who said, “Whoever would like to know if he has been inflicted with fitnah or not, then let him look and see if he views something as ḥalāl now which he used to regard as ḥarām, or if he holds something to be ḥarām which he used to hold to be ḥalāl.”

So was it not for Allāh remedying...

Imām Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: " So was it not for Allāh سبحانه وتعالى remedying his servants with medicine of trials and tribulations (difficulties and hardships) they would have transgressed and oppressed and been insolent, and if Allāh سبحانه وتعالى wants good for a servant He pours him (to drink) a medicine from trials (difficulties & hardships)."

When faced with trials and tribulations, cling to the guidance of the Messenger of Allāh

When faced with trials and tribulations, cling to the guidance of the Messenger of Allāh

Al-Imām adh-Dhahabi, [may Allāh have mercy on him], said:

“When faced with trials and tribulations, cling to the guidance of the Messenger of Allāh, صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. Embrace silence, avoiding unnecessary involvement in matters unrelated to you or those causing you problems. Entrust difficulties to Allāh [Exalted be He] and His Messenger صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, pausing to declare: ‘Allāh knows best.’”

Ruling regarding the one who becomes angry when an affliction befalls him

Ruling regarding the one who becomes angry when an affliction befalls him

Question: What is the ruling regarding the one who becomes angry when an affliction befalls him?

Answer: People are upon 4 levels regarding the circumstances of affliction:

The First Level: Being angry, and this is in various ways:

The first type: That the anger is by the heart as if he is angry at his Lord. So he becomes angry with what Allaah has decreed for him, and this (level) is haraam. And it is possible that this could lead to kufr (disbelief). Allaah said: “And among mankind is he who worships Allaah as it were, upon the very edge (i.e. in doubt); if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts back to disbelief after embracing Islaam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter.” - Al-Hajj (22):11

The second type: That the anger is by the tongue like making duaa for destruction or ruin and what is similar to that, and this is haraam.

The third type: That the anger is by the limbs like slapping the cheeks, ripping the clothes, pulling out hair, and similar to that, and all of this is haraam in contradiction to patience which is waajib (obligatory).

The Second Level: Being patient, just as the poet said:

“Patience is like its name - bitter in taste, yet its outcomes are sweeter than honey.”

So the person sees this thing (the affliction) weighs very heavy upon him, yet he bears it although he dislikes that it happened. Rather, his eemaan bears it and restrains him from being angry. So the time of affliction and the time of no affliction is not the same to him, and this (level) is waajib, because Allaah commanded the people to be patient, saying: “…and be patient. Surely, Allaah is with those who are As-Saabireen (the patient ones, etc.).” - Al-Anfaal (8):46

The Third Level: Being pleased with the affliction in that the person is pleased with the affliction and whether it happened or not, it is the same to him so he it is not difficult upon him. He does not bear it as if it is something weighing heavy on him, and this (level) is mustahabb (preferred - between haraam and waajib) and it is not waajib according to the most correct opinion. The difference between this level and the one before it is apparent because the affliction happening or not happening is the same due to the pleasure of the one on this level. As for the level before it, the affliction is hard upon him, yet he remains patient over it.

The Fourth Level: Thanking/being grateful and this is the highest level. This is that the person thanks Allaah for the affliction which has struck him in that he knows that this affliction is an expiation for his sins and perhaps a cause for an increase in his good deeds. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“There is no affliction which strikes the Muslim except that Allaah expiates with it (sins), even with a thorn that may poke him.” (Recorded by Bukhaari and Muslim)

The Supplication that is Said at the Time of Affliction – A Prophetic Remedy for Difficult Times

The Supplication that is Said at the

Time of Affliction

A Prophetic Remedy for Difficult Times

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

“In the Musnad[1] there occurs from him (i.e. the Prophet) (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) that he said:
((There is no one who is afflicted with an affliction then says:

‘Indeed we belong to Allaah, and indeed to Him we shall return. O Allaah, reward me in my affliction, and requite me with that which is better than it.’

Except that Allaah will reward him in his affliction, and will requite him with that which is better than it.))

This statement is of the most far reaching cure for the afflicted person as well as its most beneficial for him in his temporal worldly life and his life to come. Indeed, it comprises two great fundamentals, if the servant realizes them through understanding them; then he will be comforted from his affliction:
The first of them: is that the servant, and his family, and his wealth are possessions of Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic, Allaah had but placed them with the servant as something borrowed. So if He takes it from him, then it is like the lender taking his possession from the borrower.
The second: is that the eventual destination of the servant and his return is to Allaah – his True Lord, and it is a must that he will leave the dunya (the life of this world) behind him and shall come to his Lord alone – just as He created him the first time, without family or wealth or kinsfolk – but with good deeds and misdeeds.
So if this is the beginning of the servant, and that which he was entrusted with, and his ultimate end, how then can he be delighted at one that is existent or grieve over one that is nonexistent? Therefore his contemplation upon his beginning and his life to come is from the greatest form of remedy for this malady.”[2]

Point of benefit: Shaikh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said:

“The duty of the person at the time of afflictions is to have patience and anticipation of reward, so that one should not be prohibited from the reward, since it is the one who is afflicted that in reality can prohibit the reward. So if a calamity befalls you, then say:
‘Indeed we belong to Allaah, and indeed to Him we shall return. O Allaah; reward me in my affliction, and requite me with that which is better than it.’
If you say that, Allaah will reward you in your affliction, and will requite you with that which is better than it.
This is an affair stated by the Prophet (‘alaihis salaatu was-salaam), and the actuality has bore witness to it. Since Umm Salamah (radhiyallaahu ‘anhaa) was under Abu Salamah, and she used to love him with a great amount of love, so Abu Salamah (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu) died, and she said:
‘O Allaah; reward me in my affliction, and requite me with that which is better than it.’ Yet she used to say to herself: ‘Who is better than Abee Salamah?’ So when her iddah (waiting period) expired, the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) married her, so the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) was better for her than Abee Salamah.
This is something that the occurrences also often bear witness to, since if the person is patient and anticipates (reward), then indeed Allaah, The Glorified and Most High, will give the patient ones their reward in full, without reckoning, and impatience and sadness and lamenting does not repel the calamity.”[3]

After mentioning this incident and this supplication, Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) stated:

“Look then at the outcome of patience and al-Istirjaa (saying: Indeed we belong to Allaah, and indeed to Him we shall return),[4] and of following the Messenger and of being pleased with Allaah, to that which was to eventually lead to – and Umm Salamah being granted marriage to the most noble of creation to Allaah.”[5]

[4] Shaikh Zaid bin Haadi al-Madkhali (rahimahullaah) said: “In al-Istirjaa (saying: Indeed we belong to Allaah, and indeed to Him we shall return) is an acknowledgement and a submission by the owned servant of his Creator and his Originator in that He has free right of disposal in regard to him with; whatever He wishes – when He wishes – how He wishes, from living and dying and sound health and sickness and poverty and affluence and happiness and sadness – in accordance to His Wisdom and His pre-decree, The Glorified.
Likewise that his eventual destination is to Him, thus He will give full share to every doer over that which he did – and your Lord does not at all oppress anyone” (Al-Afnaan an-Nadiyyah vol 2 p.255)

Teaching in the Great Mosque of Mecca Is a Great Trial – Shaykh Taqi al-Din al-Hilali

Teaching in the Great Mosque

of Mecca Is a Great Trial

Shaykh Taqi al-Din al-Hilali

SOURCE: al-Hilālī, Muḥammad Taqī ad-Dīn : al-Daʿwa Ilá Allah fī Aqṭār Mukhtalifa, Qahira: Maktabat Dār al-Kitāb wa as-Sunnah P.307

Shaykh Muḥammad Taqī al-Dīn al-Ḥilālī:

Me and a friend of mine were transferred to teach in the Great Mosque of Mecca; and indeed teaching in the Great Mosque of Mecca is a great trial for the teacher. Often you would find a teacher – well known for knowledge and virtue – sitting and teaching in the Great Mosque of Mecca, yet his gatherings would barely exceed ten people. Then you would find another teacher, someone less than the latter with regards to fame and knowledge, yet you would see hundreds in attendance of his lesson listening. These affairs run in accordance to that which Allah ﷻ has ordained for everyone. Just like you find with shopkeepers; you find one shop frequented with many customers who generate sales whilst the shop next door – even though it stocks the exact same or even better goods  – remains inactive, no customers visit it.

I – and all praise is due to Allah ﷻ – was from the blessed ones. Hundreds would attend my lesson which took place in front of the Gate of Ibrāhīm. I do not know the cause for this except that I used to speak in a dialect that could be understood by all Arabs. As for the other teachers, their lack of attendees was due to them speaking in a local dialect [which could only be understood] by a specific people.

Music and the downfall of the nation

Music and the downfall of the nation

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

“And it is known, to the specific and the people in general, that the Fitnah of listening to music and singing is greater than the Fitnah of lamenting* by a large degree.

And what we have witnessed, we and those other than us, and what we came to know through experience is that: Singing and musical instruments have not appeared in a nation, and it spread among them, and they got busy in them, except that Allaah تعالى allowed the enemies to overpower them and afflicted them with famine, poverty and corrupt rulers.

The person of sound intellect contemplates and sees the state the world is in – and Allaah’s help is sought.”

[Madaarij al-Saalikeen (1/496)]

*Lamenting by wailing loudly, beating the cheeks and tearing the clothes are from the acts of the days of ignorance (Jaahiliyyah). In those days women were hired to wail at the death of someone.

Wherever you see Fitnah: RUN!

Wherever you see Fitnah: RUN!

{…and do not throw yourselves into destruction} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 195]

Yusuf عليه السلام fled from the Fitnah, when the wife of the `Azeez approached him:

وَاسْتَبَقَا الْبَابَ وَقَدَّتْ قَمِيصَهُ مِن دُبُرٍ

{So they raced with one another to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back}. [Surah Yusuf (12): 25]

Before his Prophethood, Moosaa عليه السلام fled from the evil:

فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ

{“So I fled from you when I feared you”} [Surah al-Shu`araa’ (26): 21]

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم instructed Hudhaifah bin al-Yamaan رضي الله عنه that during the times of Fitan. Hudhaifah said to the Prophet What do you order me to do if such a state should take place in my life?

“Stick to the group of Muslims and their Imaam (ruler).” Hudhaifah said: If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an Imaam (ruler)?

"Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite (eat) the roots of a tree till death overtakes you while you are in that state.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3606, 7084) and Saheeh Muslim (4553)]

Evil effects of Fitan:

Adopted from the Book “Athaar al-Fitan” by Shaikh `Abdul-Razzaaq bin `Abdul Muhsin al-Badr

1. Preoccupies the people and turns them away from `Ibaadah.

2. Turns them away from scholars and seeking knowledge.

3. The foolish take the lead.

4. Whoever exposes himself to Fitnah will perish.

5. Matters become doubtful as truth is mixed with falsehood.

6. Corruption of the youth.

7. Weakness in the bonds of religious brotherhood.

8. The audacity to murder and shed blood.

9. Security is disrupted.

10. Corrupt people get to spread their falsehood.

11. The enemies get an upper hand.

From the causes of Fitan

From the causes of Fitan

Allaah تعالى says: {And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad's) commandment beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.} [Surah al-Noor (24): 63]

Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said: “(It may be that) Stones are soon to descend upon you from the heavens! I say to you: ‘Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said...’ and you say to me: ‘Abu Bakr and Umar said!?’”

Imaam Ahmad رحمه الله said: “Do you know what the Fitnah is? The Fitnah is Shirk. May be the rejection of some of his words would cause one to have doubt and deviation in his heart and thereby be destroyed.”

[The quotes of Ibn `Abbaas and Imaam Ahmad have been taken from Kitaab al-Tawheed of Shaikh Muhammad Ibn `Abdul Wahhaab, Chapter #38]

Shaikh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said: “Fitnah (trials and tribulations, destruction in the land) does not occur except when the commandments of Allaah are neglected. For He تعالى has commanded us to adhere to the Haqq (truth) and commanded us with Sabr (patience). So fitnah occurs either when the truth is neglected or when patience is neglected.” [Al-Istiqaamah 1/39]

Uthaimeen: How to Handle a Blessing or a Calamity That May Come Your Way

Uthaimeen: How to Handle a Blessing

or a Calamity That May Come Your Way

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “If you are given a blessing then do not [just] take it as a blessing, becoming merry and happy. It is a blessing, there is no doubt about that, but know that you are being tested by it, [tested] to see whether you will give due thanks for it or not.

If some harm comes your way, then be patient, for that too is a trial and test from Allaah the Mighty and Majestic to test whether you will be patient or not. And if you are patient and hope for the reward from Allaah, then Allaah said, “Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning.” [Zumar 39:10]
