Al-Hasan al-Basri, [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him], said:

“[The worldly-life is treacherous], therefore be cautions, for it is like a snake, smooth to the touch, but its venom is deadly.”

Covering up the deficiencies of a woman who you want to propose to if she had repented

Covering up the deficiencies of a woman who you want to propose to if she had repented

Translated By Abbas Abu Yahya

From Tariq bin Shihaab:

‘A man was asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage and she had previously committed a bad deed which he knew about.

So, he came to Umar and mentioned it to him, Umar said:

‘Now what have you seen from her?’

The man said: ‘I have not seen anything except good! ‘

Umar said:

                   «فَزَوِّجْهَا وَلَا تُخْبِرْ».

‘Marry her and do not tell anyone.’

A Prophetic Condemnation of Racism

A Prophetic Condemnation of Racism

Ibn ‘Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allāh () gave a sermon to the people on the day of the conquest of Makkah, and he said: “O you people! Verily Allāh has abolished the arrogance of pre-Islamic ignorance from you, and its reverence to your forefathers. So, now there are two types of men: A man who is righteous, has piety and is honourable before Allāh, and a wicked man who is miserable and insignificant to Allāh. People are children of Ādam and Allāh created Ādam from the earth. Allāh said: {O you people! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allāh is the one who has most piety. Verily, Allāh is ‘Alīm [All-Knowing], Khabīr [Perfectly Aware]} (49:13).”

Ibn al-‘Arabī said in commentary of this narration:

“During the days of pre Islamic ignorance, nobility would be based on particular features as opposed to piety. So Allāh nullified all forms of pride and nobility based on inherent or inherited features and only left that [nobility] connected to piety; which is to obey Allāh and adhere to His legislation. Whereby the origin of man is one, from clay. And their father is one, Ādam, who is the origin [from which humans were born], Ādam and Ḥawa” [Eve].

Celebrating Valentine’s

Celebrating Valentine’s

Questioner:

Celebrating Valentine’s Day has recently become widespread, especially amongst female students. It is a Christian celebration and they celebrate it by wearing completely red attire consisting of red clothing and red shoes, and by exchanging red flowers. We would like from your eminence a clarification of the ruling on celebrating these kinds of events. Also, what is your advice to the Muslims regarding these kinds of affairs? May Allāh preserve you and look after your affairs.

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaimīn:

Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible from a number of angles.

Firstly, it is an unorthodox celebration that has no basis in Islamic rules and customs.

Secondly, it encourages excessive passion and infatuation.

Thirdly, it encourages a person to preoccupy his heart with the likes of these lowly affairs that are in opposition to the guidance of the righteous predecessors, may Allāh be pleased with them.

So it is not permissible to initiate on this day anything symbolic of a celebration, whether it be supplying food, drink or clothing, exchanging gifts or anything else.

A Muslim must derive honour from his religion and not be a yes-man, who follows all and sundry. I ask Allāh the Most High that He protects the Muslims from all trials and tribulations, both apparent and hidden, and that He takes care of us by taking charge of our affairs and leading us to success.

The Crescent Moon is not an Islamic Symbol Explained by Shaykh Salih Fawzan

The Crescent Moon is not an Islamic Symbol

Explained by Shaykh Salih Fawzan  حفظه الله

Question: May Allah reward you with good and treat you well. Why do the Muslims symbolize the crescent moon on the minarets of their Masjids?

Shaykh Fawzan: This is a custom they have taken and observed it. There is no basis for it from the standpoint of the religion. It is nothing more than a custom.
