The
seventh question of Fatwa no. 2677
Q
7: Which is the best book of Tafsir (exegesis of the meanings of the Qur’an)
among the old and contemporary books?
A:
Judging which are the best books of Tafsir differs depending on the
capability and capacity of the reader. Anyway, the best books are the Tafsir of
Ibn Jarir Al-Tabary and Ibn Kathir and other books of Tafsir that adopt the
Athar-based (Narrations from the Companions) approach of Tafsir. These are
simpler in expression, clearer in teaching and conveying the meanings of Qur’an,
closer to the truth, more clarifying to the objectives of Shari‘ah (Islamic
law), along with citing the relevant authentic Hadiths and Athars,
and resorting to Muhkamat (decisive legislative,
self-contained Qur'anic verses, closed to any interpretation) for interpreting
Mutashabihat (similar and dependent Qur'anic verses, open to more than one
interpretation or whose meaning is known only to Allah).
May
Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad,
his family, and Companions.
