Shaykh Muḥammad Taqī ad-Dīn al-Hilālī:

After I settled down in Tétouan (a city in northern Morocco), I established a monthly magazine titled The Arabic Tongue within it I published articles clarifying the falsehood of the Ashʿarī creed – a belief that the people of Morocco have religiously accepted since the time of Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī Tūrmart and the Almohad dynasty, and what we are witnessing today is the direct result of his propagation.

Before his time, Moroccans were upon the creed of the Salaf, so much so that when the book Iḥyā ʿUlūm ad-Dīn of Abū Ḥāmīd al-Ghazālī reached Morocco, the Moroccans gathered to burn it. Scholars from both – Andalusia and Morocco unanimously agreed in doing so due to what it contained of blameworthy speech. An example of such speech was; “There is no possibility of anything more perfect than what exist” meaning; it is impossible of Allah fashioning a more perfect world than the one that exists. al-Ghazālī says; “If there was possibility of such a thing, then that would be an oppression which negates justice.” – I have paraphrased his speech so that the ordinary reader may understand it – and so al-Ghazālī went from attributing oppression to Allah ﷻ to attributing inability to his power, and Allah ﷻ is far above that.

So the last Moroccan dynasty that was upon the methodology of the Salaf was the The Almoravid dynasty who were also known as the Mūlathamīn or the Lamtūnīn – an ascription to Lamtuna who was from a nomadic Berber tribe.
