THIRTEEN MEANINGS OF THE WORD [ذِكْر]

—IMAAM IBNUL JAWZEE (RAHIMAHULLAAH)



In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
It is intended to mean remembrance with the tongue.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَذِكْرِكُمْ آبَاءَكُمْ
”Remember Allah as you remember your forefathers.”
[Al-Baqarah: Ayah: 200]
It is intended to mean preservation.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
وَاذْكُرُوا مَا فِيهِ
”And remember that which is therein…
[Al-Baqarah: Ayah: 63]
It is intended to mean obedience.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ
”Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you..”
[Al-Baqarah: Ayah: 152]
 It is intended to mean the five daily prayers.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
فَإِذَا أَمِنتُمْ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ
”And when you are in safety, offer the Salat (prayer)…
[Al-Baqarah: Ayah: 239]
It is intended to mean remembrance with the heart.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
ذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا
”(They) remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins…
[Aal Imraan: Ayah: 135]
It is intended to mean clarification.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
أَوَعَجِبْتُمْ أَن جَاءَكُمْ ذِكْرٌ
“Do you wonder that there has come to you a Reminder 
[Al-Araaf: Ayah: 63]
It is intended to mean news/information.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
قُلْ سَأَتْلُو عَلَيْكُم مِّنْهُ ذِكْرًا
Say: “I shall recite to you something of his story.
[Al-Kahf: Ayah: 83]
It is intended to mean Tawheed.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِي
 ”But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur’an nor acts on its orders, etc.)…
[Taha: Ayah: 124]
It is intended to mean the Qur’aan.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
مَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن ذِكْرٍ
Comes not unto them an admonition (a chapter of the Qur’an)…
[Al-Anbiyaa: Ayah: 2]
It is intended to mean nobility/high status.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ
In which there is Dhikrukum, (your Reminder or an honour for you i.e. honour for the one who follows the teaching of the Qur’an and acts on its orders).
[Al-Anbiyaa: Ayah: 10]
 It is intended to mean blemish/flaw.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
أَهَٰذَا الَّذِي يَذْكُرُ آلِهَتَكُمْ
“Is this the one who talks (badly) about your gods?”
[Al-Anbiyaa: Ayah: 6]
It is intended to mean Asr prayer.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّي
[Alas! I did love the good (these horses)] instead of remembering my Lord (in my ‘Asr prayer)”
[Saad: Ayah: 32]
It is intended to mean the Juma’ah Salah.
[Allaah (The Most High)] said:
فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
‘’Come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu'ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salat (prayer)]
 [Al-Juma’ah: Ayah: 9]
