RULING ON THE ADDICTION TO COFFEE

RULING ON THE ADDICTION TO COFFEE

Question:
If someone is addicted to coffee, does it become Haram for him/her?

Answer:
Bismillahi wasssalaatu wassalamu alaa rasoolillahi amma ba’ad
It is still Halaal since coffee is allowed to drink and is not an intoxicant. However, if a person continues to like coffee and it only becomes a continuous favourite drink or a habit. A substance becomes an intoxicant only if you feel high (called in Arabic سكر, which means to get drunk or get high where an individual’s senses are almost knocked out) when you take it and when you are not able to take it you crave for it so much that you would do anything to get it.
If other intoxicants or ingredients that makes a person high is added into the coffee, then it becomes Haram, not because of the coffee itself but the intoxicating ingredients added to it.
